Review: iKlip Xpand for tablet or smartphone

- August 5th, 2014

 IKXPAND

Back in May 2013, we reviewed iKlip 2 for iPad by IK Multimedia. It was a clever product back then, but the company has really taken it up a notch with its successors – the iKlip Xpand and iKlip Xpand mini, two all-new universal mic stands for smartphones and tablets.

The previous models were specific for an iPad model. The latest reincarnations are designed so regardless as to whether you have a 1st gen iPad, iPad mini, iPad Air or even an Android tablet, iKlip Xpand will fit all of those. The same holds true for your iPhone 4S, 5S, iPod touch, or Android smartphone – iKlip Xpand mini is for that. The secret, well it’s not so secret, is the new expandable spring-loaded design that can stretch to accommodate the varying sizes of the devices.

It’s still made from solid thermoplastic and features iKlip’s familiar ball joint mechanism, which allows you to adjust and position it any way you want so you can get just the right angle and perfect view of your device. The new models have also been simplified, making it easier and quicker to put together. With IK’s rubberized Gorilla Grip and padding, your device will be kept snug and secure in its place and won’t get scratched.

Xpand XPANDED

iKlip Xpand is designed for tablets and other devices with a display size of 7″ to 12.1″. Its holding bracket will expand to accommodate a device width of 6″ to 8.7″. Similarly, its little brother, iKlip Xpand mini is designed for smartphones or devices with displays of 3.5″ to 6″ and expands to a width of 2.13″ to 3.58″.

Both models can be attached to any standard mic stand pole or horizontal boom with a diameter of up to 30mm.

iKlip Stage – a page turner

To add even more value to Xpand, IK has released iKlip Stage for iPad, a page turning assistant for iPad only. The app, compatible with a wide range of file formats, allows you to manage your music – bring in music scores, lyrics and create set lists – giving you seamless access while performing on stage.

To turn a page, you can simply give your iPad a swipe or use one of IK’s other gadgets like iRig BlueBoard – a Bluetooth enabled MIDI pedalboard that uses your feet to turn pages or iRing motion controller to do the same by simply waving your hand.  iKlip Stage is not limited to Xpand; it can also be your companion for a variety of iKlip products.

Like many of IK’s apps, you get basic functionality for free with optional paid upgrades. The free version accommodates up to 30 files and two set lists, which might be adequate for some users. If you register your iKlip, as an added bonus, IK will double your allowance at no extra charge. If you’re a heavy duty musician, and 60 files and 4 set lists is not enough, for under $10, you can open the floodgates to both unlimited files and unlimited playlists through an in-app purchase.

Currently, there’s no app available for Android tablets.

Bottom Line

IK Multimedia has made significant improvement to the functionality of the iKlip line. And it’s even better since chances are, you won’t have to go out and buy another stand if you change your device to one similar in size. The only consideration is if Apple does unveil an iPhone 6 with a display that’s larger than 6″ but less than 7″; that fits right in-between the two Xpand models – but I guess at this point, we’ll just have to wait and see.

Designed and made in Italy, iKlip Xpand retails for $49.99 and iKlip Xpand mini is $39.99 and available directly from IK Multimedia or Amazon.

Overall Rating: 4.5 / 5
