Top 10 home renovation apps

Home renovation continues to be a popular past time, as many of us try to keep up with the Joneses. While it can be an exciting adventure with a rewarding outcome, it’s also often confusing for novices. While we can’t have Mike Holmes or Debbie Travis guiding us the entire way, there are a lot of handy apps to help your project be successful. Load up your smartphone with these apps and add it to your tool belt!

Houzz
Browse through over 70,000 photos of homes and landscapes to get inspiration for the look that’s just right for you. Instead of scouring magazines to make a messy scrapbook, Houzz allows you to save your favourite images to a virtual idea book!

DreamHome
Draw more inspiration with this app, featuring the works of professional designers as well as designs submitted by users. It offers offline viewing, so no Internet is required when you want to browse ideas.

Renovation Budget Tracker
Don’t let your costs spiral out of control – Use this app to track and budget your expenses, so you know the exact total you have spent to date. You can also use it to double check your bills for accuracy.

Home Sizer
Need to calculate the square footage of your home? Home Sizer allows you to enter the dimensions and calculate room areas, as well as the cumulative usable square footage and estimate gross square footage of your entire house.

Canadian Tire
Once you figure out what supplies you want, check product availability at Canadian Tire and find the closest location to you with this app. Use it to browse the flyer on the way there, and once you’re in the store you can use the app to scan barcodes for product information, reviews and pricing.

iHandy Level
Tired of lugging a heavy level wherever you go? Download this virtual level onto your phone for free! You can use it for picture alignment, angle measurement, roof pitch calculation, and more.

iHandy Carpenter
If you like the level, you may want to upgrade to this app which includes 4 more tools from iHandy: a plumb bob to verify the verticality of lines or walls; a surface level to level any flat surface; a bubble level bar; a steel protractor, measuring angles from 0 to 180 degrees; and a steel ruler, capable of measuring things much longer than your iPhone!

Expert Video: Home Repair
Use this video collection of home repair tutorials created by experts to learn essential DIY home repair projects. Learn the basics of drywall, deck installation, laying decking, installing hardwood floors, and more!

Ben Colour Capture
Ready to put up some paint? Search for specific colours or browse the 3,300 colours available from Benjamin Moore. You can also snap a picture of anything inspiring that catches your eye and instantly get a match from their database, and then use it to locate the closest Benjamin Moore retailer to you.

Decomash
Once you’ve got the perfect colour painted on the walls, you can use this app to advise you on a complementary piece of artwork to match the room. Simply take a photo of the space and Decomash will analyze it and search through thousands of artwork to find appropriate pieces. The app is budget conscious, so when it finds art that has the same matching quality, it will show you the less expensive option.

Thanks, Jimmy! Project Reno is really nice! I started using it and it’s really easy… They should add it to the list. They even have a step by step tutorial in their site http://www.projectreno.net
