A Serious Home Theatre

I thought a couple of good theatre-style chairs, a 50” screen, a little Dolby Digital Surround Sound and a popcorn maker would keep most people happy watching the Olympic Gold Medal Hockey Game, until I came across this little set-up.

Carefree, a company out of Arizona just completed a 23-seat home theatre set-up, that its president, David Marsh says many companies would shy away from.

And bigger than the average house, this home theatre,  with emphasis on the word “home”, measures whopping 2,318 square feet. It features a 21-foot Stewart projection screen, a Focal Grande Utopia Beryllium speaker system,  TruAudio BB 465 in-wall surround speakers, Crestron touch screens for control, and much, much more to drool over.

But the real driver of this puppy is the Digital Projection LIGHTNING 30-1080p Projector.  It’s a 3-chip DLP (Digital Light Processing) Projector capable of displaying 1920×1020 with a respectable 2000:1 contrast ratio. It has a brightness of 15,000 ANSI lumens (typical projectors run about 1,000- 2,000). It measures 19.5”H x28.5”Wx40.5”D, weighs just under 250lbs and has a price tag similar to a nicely equipped BMW 5-series – $80K US.

Now that’s just for the projector itself, it doesn’t include the screen, the sound system, the furniture or the design and installation. I’m afraid to ask what the total cost might have been, or maybe they wouldn’t tell me.

Did I mention that this individual also had an outdoor setup installed? They only used a 6,800-lumen unit for that one.

If you think this is the way to watch the Olympics, well it might be too late for Vancouver 2010, but London 2012 might be doable – the question is whether it’ll be paid for by then, but then again tonight’s estimated  Lotto MAX jackpot is $42 million.
