Apple offers “Download Later” option on select purchases

- April 23rd, 2013

DownloadNow

When you make an iTunes purchase like a movie or TV series, don’t you want to download it now? But sometimes it’s a big file; maybe you’re on the road, have poor bandwidth or perhaps have a promo code that expires at midnight and hate lose out. Apple has a solution for that.

According to a MacWorld report, Apple has made a slight modification to the iTunes store. It now offers download options other than “now”, when purchasing movie bundles, TV seasons, season passes, music box sets or individual movies and TV episodes.

Trek over to Apple’s support site for the related document and you’ll discover that you actually have 3 options to choose from. If you choose to download later, you can always return to your “Purchased” items when you’re ready. You can also choose to download your entire purchase; let’s say all 12 episodes of your favorite TV show now. However, now, depending on the type of purchase you make, ie: movie bundle, music box sets etc., you might have further options to choose from.  A pop-up dialogue box will give you your options.

For example, buying the Back to the Future Trilogy, you can opt to download just the first movie. For TV shows, in the case of Season Passes (where you subscribe to an entire season) and completed TV seasons, again another example, clicking the download button should get you the earliest unseen episode.  This is great especially if you can’t remember which episode you saw last. Plus, if you’re trying to complete your Season Pass, you’ll automatically get the most recently aired episode, giving you one less thing to have to think about.

These options apply to select purchases, when using iTunes 11 (Mac or PC), iOS 6 or later on your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch. Your country or region must also have support for iTunes in the Cloud (which in Canada, it does).

For more info, please check out the related Apple Support document and don’t forget to stock up on popcorn.

This is good for people who want to make purchases before a sale ends, but don’t have the space currently to run on their device. Being someone who owns a 64Gb iPhone, I don’t have this problem, but I can understand others that would. This will allow them time to clear space and still get that app downloaded for the discounted price, or whatever it may be.

James – good point about capacity. Thanks for the comment.
