Mini lineups for iPad mini but enthusiasts still arrive early

The lineup scene at the Apple Store at Edmonton’s Southgate Centre early this morning certainly looked nothing like days gone by, but still, some die-hards camped overnight to be one of the first to get Apple’s first 7” wonder.

Despite the smaller crowds, plenty of Starbucks coffee was on hand and Apple store employees greeted buyers with the usual loud roar and enthusiasm as they had done with each previous rollout.

Will Maitner, from Edmonton, along with a few others, arrived around 8PM Thursday evening to secure their place in line, which didn’t seem to really start populating until this morning.

Maitner found it “strangely” quiet, but was thrilled nonetheless.

“I had the original iPad, when the iPad 2 came out,” said Maitner. “I thought, oh cool maybe they’ll make it smaller, but they didn’t. A year and a half later, I got what I wanted.”

He admitted he’d actually lined up this morning to get an iPad mini for his daughter.

“Mine is in the ether right now; I’m waiting for the 64GB model with LTE.”

Part way along the queue others had arrived about three hours before the store’s early 8AM opening.

Sherwood Park residents, Guy Algot and his 14-year old daughter Dana were in line for the event. Algot, a Macintosh database developer and veteran Mac user from the product’s earliest days, like Maitner, was here for his daughter.

“She saved up to buy, she can’t decide which one.”

The decision she had to make was not between iPad mini models, but rather between it and the new 4th generation iPad.

As it turned out, Dana who was very keen and seemed very knowledgeable about each model, left with one of each. So rather than having to choose, young Miss Algot will use either or depending on what she’s doing and where’s she’s going.

Why is the Free Press advertising those products in the guise of news ?
