It seems that everyday there is a new effort to stay green and with new gadgets hitting the streets everyday the old, obsolete and decrepit ones have to go somewhere. And TV commercials, billboards, pop-up ads are reminding us of that – Rethink, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
But how about adding “Regift” to the list? Stuff that’s not totally state of the art, but still works can find new homes especially if the recipient simply surfs the web and checks email. And what about the stuff that doesn’t work? It can be regifted too.
Now at this point, I hear you snarling back at me like Dr. Evil. But wait! No, I don’t mean dump, but rather reinvent.
A self-professed burnt-out technical writer named Susan from the central California coast, who goes by the handle Capitola Girl, came up with an idea to make unique jewelry from things that inspire her which includes nature and even old keyboards as a way of “mellowing-out” and expressing herself.
She calls her innovations the Silicon Gallies Collection. She sells exclusively on-line thru ETSY, a global on-line community that helps reconnect “makers” and buyers. Her works have been featured on NBC, in Jewelry Digest and Elle Magazine.
Capitola Girl is not only expressing herself and running a small business; she’s cleverly keeping the earth green one key at a time.
