Over 1 Billion Angry Birds downloaded

- May 9th, 2012

In a world that strives for peace and the pursuit of happiness, who would’ve thought that an app featuring angry birds would be so popular? Well it has. The Angry Birds games have now been downloaded over 1 billion times and there seems to be no end in sight. This incredible milestone comes on the heels of record-breaking financial results from Helsinki, Finland-based Rovio Entertainment Ltd., and the creator of the Angry Birds franchise.

About Angry Birds

For those of you who are new to Angry Birds, the original app, is a casual game that pitted birds against green pigs that stole the bird’s eggs. Of course they would be angry! The app was an instant hit; but who would have thought that it would go on to become the #1 paid app of all time.

Rovio followed up their maiden app with a special edition app: Angry Birds Seasons. This adventure takes the furious fowl through the seasons and the holiday including Valentines Day, Christmas, Halloween and more.  In the third installment, Angry Birds Rio, the birds find themselves kidnapped, caged and shipped to Rio de Janeiro where they make their escape but are then tasked with saving Blu and Jewel, two macaws and stars from the movie, Rio.

Space

Their latest release, Angry Birds Space, takes the birds out of this world after a giant claw kidnaps their eggs and takes them through a wormhole. The birds have no choice but to give chase and find themselves surrounded by space pigs, but this time, they fight their battles in zero gravity.

Profitable Franchise

You can see why there have been over a billion downloads. With both free and paid versions, it has also been very profitable for the company to the tune of $67.6 million in pretax earnings on sales of $106.3 million for 2011.

But not all of their revenue comes from the games directly. About 30% of their total revenue for the year came from merchandising and licensing.

There seems to be no end in flight for the birds. During 2011, the number of employees has jumped to 224 from only 28. The company says that they are currently working with over 200 licensing partners on developing new products and services within the franchise.

Links to all Versions

If you want to help get Angry Birds to 2 billion downloads, Rovio has made it really easy. On their YouTube page, where they feature the above 22-second video clip to commemorate their milestone; they’ve placed links for all the Angry Birds games for every platform they support. This includes links for iPhone, iPad, Mac OS X, Windows PC, Android and their Facebook version as well.

I was wondering how people found out about Angry Birds when it was first released in 2009?

That’s a very good question. 2009 seems like a long time ago in “app years” :)
