Whether you are a male or a female, if you came back from the mall with a bathroom scale under your arm, it very possible that all h*** might break loose in the family household. But in a modern tech savvy family, a wireless hassle-free health-tracking device might just be a bit more welcomed.

It’s called the Withings Wireless Scale WS-30. So I guess any way you slice it, it’s still a weight scale. But this one has a neat twist – there’s an app for it!

Designed to run on Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, the scale measures both your weight and your BMI.  Working in conjunction with the free Withings Health Companion App available from the Apple App Store, this duo is designed to support you and motivate you to lose weight.

withings appThe app allows you to set weekly weight loss goals, set meeting reminders, visualize your weight trends and track your progress each time after you step off the scale.

If you are already using other health and fitness apps, titles like RunKeeper, MyFitnessPal, LoseIt! and some others, the WS-30 is designed to integrate with then quite nicely.

The system is so easy to use. As long as you remember to step on the scale, you’re good to go, as your data is automatically uploaded to your wireless device the minute you get off.

We know how personal one’s weight can be; so your data is securely stored in the cloud on Withings servers. Also, with Withings dashboard, you can access your data from any Internet connected device. Alternately, if you want to tell the world, you can share your weight on Facebook and Twitter either on-demand or each time you jump on scale.

You can also share your scale with the entire family, as it supports up to eight users, each with their own account so they can keep their weight from prying eyes.

One neat feature is that once the scale gets to know your weight, it automatically recognizes who you are. I wonder if that works with twins who weight about the same. I digress.

The Withings Wireless Scale WS-30 system works with an iPhone 3GS or higher, all iPad models, iPod touch third-generation and higher; and all must be running iOS 5. Android support is on its way.

If you would just like to use the wellness scale simply as a regular scale, you can do that too, but why would you?

Scales these days are fairly inexpensive. However, this could make a nice home holiday gift for the health-conscious family or one that just likes gadgets.

The scale supports weights ranging from 11 to 396 lbs. (5-180kg.) It comes only in white and runs on 4x AAA batteries (included). It sells for $129.95 and available directly from the Apple Canada Store.
