We test out a lot of apps at GetConnected and the coolest one I’ve come across this week is Sonar. Have you ever been at an event or party and later discovered that you’re friend or colleague had attended as well? The Sonar app (available for free for iPhone and iPad) makes sure you don’t miss another connection. With it you can walk into a room and find and connect with friends, business contacts, fellow alumni, your social media followers, or even like-minded singles.

There is a lot written about what people post about themselves on social media, and whether or not that is a good thing.  New location based services such as foursquare ramp up that controversy. Letting others know where you are might have social advantages, and has the potential for interesting and useful services based on where you are at the moment.

Foursquare makes business fun

On the surface, location-aware apps appear to be a breach of privacy, an exercise in pointlessness. “Why would I want to transmit where I am?” or “Who really cares where people are at every given moment? LAME!” are inner monologues that can occur when you think of these things. Heck, I sure did; I’m not exactly a social networking guru and enjoy my privacy.

But I gotta say, Foursquare is pretty awesome. If it’s used right.

The word on the grapevine is that next month Facebook plans to unveil a tool that will add another dynamic to your friend integration.  It seems you will be able to keep up to speed with your friends’ current locations.

Facebook has been working on a location-based tool for almost a year, but have been waiting to get their privacy terms water-tight and the service perfected. Rumour has it that there will be two distinct features of the tool. In its simplest version you’ll be able to directly share your location with friends. The more interesting aspect is that this tool will allow for independent developers to create apps that take advantage of the Facebook location function.
