Using Social Media To Honour Remembrance Day

- November 8th, 2011

This Friday (11-11-11) is Remembrance Day, a day to remember the sacrifices that our soldiers have made for our freedom. It’s been 92 years since the memorial day was first established by King George V as a day of remembrance, but the modern world, with all of it’s new-fangled technology, continues the tradition of remembrance. Here’s how you can honour Remembrance day via social media:

Smartphone App (Free for Android and iPhone)
The Veterans Matter app helps you fully honour Remembrance day by suggesting different ways for you honour the day, find an event or ceremony near you, share your thoughts, download mobile phone wallpapers, and locate war cemeteries, monuments and battlefields.

Facebook
Many Facebook users will change their profile pictures to photos related to the day, from poppies to relatives who were or are in the military. You can also “like” the Canada Remembers page, a popular Remembrance Day page that offers videos, photos, and discussion forums.

Twitter
The Veterans Affairs official Twitter page gives you up-to-the minute news on the memorial day, and even answer your questions.

Twibbons
A Twibbon is kind of like a bumper sticker for your Twitter or Facebook avatar, promoting your cause by overlaying an image on your profile pic. During Veterans’ Week, you can show your support for Vets by wearing your poppy online as a tribute.

YouTube
On the Veterans Affairs Canada official YouTube page you can watch videos commemorating historical war moments, such as Canadian Astronaut Robert Thirsk sending a Remembrance Day message to Canadian Veterans.

Sonar

We test out a lot of apps at GetConnected and the coolest one I’ve come across this week is Sonar. Have you ever been at an event or party and later discovered that you’re friend or colleague had attended as well? The Sonar app (available for free for iPhone and iPad) makes sure you don’t miss another connection. With it you can walk into a room and find and connect with friends, business contacts, fellow alumni, your social media followers, or even like-minded singles.
