‘Let’s beat Ellen’ retweet campaigns spark

- March 5th, 2014

Twitter is a powerful force in the online realm.

During the Oscars, Ellen DeGeneres tweeted a selfie with a bunch of celebrities that was retweeted over one million times. Proving, of course, that with a picture and a couple of words strung together, a tweet can become one of the most popular, most seen posts around.

Seeing how quickly a gimmick can take off -like trying to beat the world record for most retweets- others have joined in, tweeting everything from a photo of an adorable elderly man to a photo of a single staple lying on a table.

With more “let’s beat Ellen by retweeting this picture” campaigns rapidly popping up, we collected the biggest and best momentum’s circulating Twitter right now to make it a little easier for you.

1. ) Lone staple on a table

Tweeted by Boring Twitter, who boast 182,000 followers, this photo was retweeted just over 19,000 times and is still steadily climbing during the time that this this post was written.

2.) Adorable elderly man wants to beat Ellen

Terry Shipman has earned himself a spot at the top of the retweet game after receiving almost 70,000 retweets of this adorable selfie. But let’s be honest here, Terry’s not playing fairly. Any photo that has a cat or dog in it is just going to rocket through the internet. Well played Terry, well played.

 3. ) Back in the running race

This is incredible, really. After Ellen’s tweet destroyed President Obama’s petty 700,000 retweets of this reelected announcement, dedicated Democrats and Obama fans began retweeting the original post AGAIN. They want their president back on top, and it looks like the campaign is finally underway to make it happen.

Of course, there are hundreds of smaller retweeting campaigns happening right now, and if you type in “beat Ellen’s record,” you should be able to see a bunch listed.

Now all you have to decide is which campaign you’re going to lend your retweeting too.
