‘Tweet-a-Coffee’ lets you buy your followers Starbucks over Twitter

- January 9th, 2014

Bringing a hot cup of Joe to a friend just got a lot more tweetable.

Starbucks Canada announced on Thursday the launch of their new e-gifting program, “Tweet-a-Coffee.” The new program allows tweeters across Canada to instantly reward that newest follower or close friend with a coffee from Starbucks via a tweeted message.

“Tweet-a-coffee is a brand new way for our customers to connect with friends and followers and share the gift of Starbucks instantly,” said Richard Burjaw, vice president of Starbucks Coffee Canada. “Whether it’s to say #thank you, #congratulations or simply #justbecause we’re thrilled to enable the ability for customers to spread some kindness.”

The service will be available for anyone in Canada with a registered account, and recipients of free coffee tweets will be able to redeem their drinks by either printing the e-gift code, or loading their gift via the Starbucks mobile app.

All users have to do is tweet, “@tweetacoffee” to the recipients handle, and the $5 gift card should appear through a link sent to them through an official Starbucks tweet. Burjaw said it’s an important first step in developing gifting techniques for an Internet and social media savvy audience.

Twitter Canada boss Kristine Stewart said Canadians are some of the most prominent and engaged Twitter users, so using the medium as the next step in e-gifting just made sense.

“We’re excited for Starbucks to bring this program to Canada,” Stewart said.

As of right now, there’s no confirmation on whether Canadians can gift coffees via Twitter to other parts of the world, like the U.S.
