Gold iPhone 5S fetches over $10,000 on eBay (or maybe not)

Even if someone spent two days standing in line waiting to get his or her hands on a gold iPhone 5S, it might have been time well spent as one sold today on eBay for $10,100 US. Now I know that the gold version of Apple’s latest high-end iPhone model is somewhat on the scarce side but paying what amounts to over 15 times its retail price seems a little bit ridiculous, there’s no actual gold in it!

Regardless, an eBay seller in Bridgeport Connecticut, USA will receive $10,100 US, less eBay’s cut of course, for posting this item on the auction website.

Going by the seller name Papakar, the auction which ended today at 13:07:01 Pacific Daylight Time, had a total of 51 bids.

While the iPhone was an unlocked model, i.e. not attached to any specific carrier, you might actually be surprised to find out that it wasn’t the iPhone 5S 32GB model or the iPhone 5S 64 GB model, it was actually only a 16GB model.

Well I wonder whether or not the buyer just has a lot of money to burn and wanted to be the first person on the block or was absolutely desperate to get his or her hands on one. Regardless, I’m sure that if they wait a little bit, they probably could pick one up sometime in October. Nevertheless it certainly makes for a good story.

How much are you willing to pay for a Gold iPhone 5S?

UPDATE Sep 23, 11;45PM:  Sometimes things are too good to be true. Although the auction still shows as complete and nothing out of the ordinary, according to TrustedNerd, who contacted the seller, the bid was apparently a fake, the seller cancelled the transaction and was offering a second-chance offer to the next highest bidder.

I guess how much it will actually sell for is still to be seen.

UPDATE Sep 24 , 10:30 AM: I received a reply directly from the seller, when asked if it actually sold for $10,100: “Nope that transaction was cancelled as the buyer bid the item with wrong number of zeroes. It was a mistake.”

And so the saga continues.

UPDATE Sep 24 , 11:45 AM: The iPhone sold for $970.00 U.S. on 70 bids.
