Did you ever wonder what Google Maps would look like with less colour and bigger pixels?
No? Well, then you’re like most of the rest of the people on this planet.
Still, that hasn’t stopped Google from launching an 8-bit version of its product. In a video posted on YouTube, the company announces it has ported Google Maps to the long-defunct Nintendo Entertainment System. The video shows a rather docile family huddled around the TV, punching various locations into the NES controller and smiling when the results are shown to them on a green Legend of Zelda-style map.
It’s a parody video, of course. Perhaps, an early April Fool’s joke. But the map itself is real. You can access it by clicking on the pic labelled “Quest” in the top-right corner of the screen.
You can bring up an “8-bit” Street View. It’s actually a filter that loads overtop of the photo, but its nostalgic crappiness warms the cockles of my heart nonetheless.
