Western LRT Corridor Study Costs

- June 28th, 2012

If you’re looking for how much it costs to study a single corridor in the western LRT environmental assessment, this gives you a general idea.

This is part of a memo sent by deputy city manager Nancy Schepers to council a couple days ago in response to a question by Orléans Coun. Bob Monette:

Provincial environmental assessment legislation, which governs the Western LRT Corridor study, requires the City to look at all technically-feasible options before any are discounted.  As such, this study is assessing a short list of 15 technically-feasible corridors, one of which is the Ottawa River Parkway corridor.

As of May 18, 2012, the amount spent specifically on the Ottawa River Parkway corridor option is approximately $180K.  This figure only represents the work done to date on that option, and this corridor is being analyzed at the same level of detail as the other 14 options comprising the entire study.  The approved budget to complete the entire study is $3.5M including taxes.

It appears Monette actually didn’t get the answer he was looking for in this response. He wanted to know how much more it would cost to keep studying the parkway as a light-rail option. He was getting at the fact the National Capital Commission has rejected the parkway for LRT, so what’s the point of continuing to study it?

At council yesterday, Monette said his comments no longer stand, since the city is trying to work with the NCC on coordinating the necessary planning studies.

And so, the 15-route study chugs on.

You Might Dig Wednesday’s Council Meeting If…

- June 26th, 2012

1. You like to smoke your water pipe in city parks.

2. You’re interested in the role the city plays in greenhouse gas emissions.

3. You live around Tunney’s Pasture or Mechanicsville.

4. You’re a current or former Ecopass holder.

5. You’re watching how the city will extend LRT west past Tunney’s Pasture.

6. One word: Presto.

7. You’re sick of the power going out in Kanata.

The meeting will be in the Centrepointe Studio Theatre at Ben Franklin Place because of ongoing renovations in City Hall’s council chambers. It’s still a 10 a.m. start.
