Special Lansdowne Meeting Cancelled

- June 28th, 2011

There won’t be a special council meeting on Lansdowne Park next week, as previously planned.

City clerk and solicitor Rick O’Connor told council in a memo today the meeting has been cancelled and expected to be rescheduled after the court delivers a verdict in the Friends of Lansdowne legal challenge. New Lansdowne reports will now be tabled at a finance and economic development committee meeting in August.

The interesting thing is this special council meeting was originally scheduled knowing that the court wouldn’t likely make a decision until later in July.

If you have been following the court proceedings, you’ll know that there is some controversy over the city’s funding equity. The city’s lawyers have said the misinformation will be eventually cleared up at a council meeting, but the city wasn’t willing to call an emergency meeting during the court challenge if it meant the Friends were going to cross-examine city staff on the new financial information, and as a result, extend the hearing.

Of course, I can’t say for sure that’s the reason why this special council meeting was cancelled.

Yes, maybe it’s just a coincidence.
