The New Ottawa.ca

- December 13th, 2011

The city is still working on the back-end production of the new ottawa.ca, but this is what the homepage will look like next summer. There will be a modified homepage launched possibly by the end of the year to dovetail with the new Service Ottawa portal, but the city wants to move to the three-tab design in the months that follow. The design and new search functionality cost $260,000.

What do people think of the new look?

I like how prominent Service Ottawa is on the site. Overall the site is a lot more simple. The background pic makes Ottawa look like a rural small town though. Doesn’t do much to help the city’s ho-hum image. But it’s definitely a huge improvement.

Yeah, I don’t think the design will knock people’s socks off, but it’s a good idea to reduce the number of links on the homepage. As long as it’s functional and easy to find information. That’s what’s most important. And the search function given a high profile spot on the page is a good idea. The City of Calgary does something similar with immediate drop-down suggestions.
