My latest column is about how to recover from being laid off.
Have you ever been laid off? How did you get your career back on track?

Blogging excites me because it’s such a young medium. There are conventions, but no established rules. Anything goes.
My theory of blogging is that what I have to say is the least interesting thing about this blog. The best part of Cool Blog Name to Come — yes, that’s the name of the thing, for better or worse — is the comments you leave.
Readers make this blog what it is. I’m afraid it’s up to you.

I personally have never been laid off, but my family members sure have. My husband was laid off back in the early recession of the 80′s. With a wife and two young kids, he had to persevere and through hard work, determination and never, ever saying “never”, he “pounded the pavement” and eventually found employment, a career which he will be retiring from this month after 32 years with them. So yes, his lay-off in the 80′s recession was a blessing in disguise.
Both of our sons lost their jobs within the automotive industry a few years ago. One of them took it upon himself to take a couple of courses with his severence pay and although not related at all to what he ended up doing, because he had the gumption to try to get ahead, someone thought that because of that he would be a good hire and he has been working again in a career that will hold a much, much better future for him than the automotive industry ever could.
After a long and demoralizing job search, our other son was finally able to take advantage of the Second Careers program, took a 2 year University course, and after thinking he couldn’t do it, passed with honours. Then it was another struggle to find work, but he did, and in his chosen field no less. Life is good.
You can’t give up folks. That old saying, “Where there’s a will, there’s a way”, I think says it best.
