Got any thoughts on the Drummond report?
I find it hilarious one of the recommendations is to cut high school back to four years by eliminating the so-called victory lap.
Wait, what? Didn’t the Ontario government do this already?
They certainly did. But it turns out after serving their standard four years, many kids come back for a second shot at the final year anyway.
So eliminating the fifth year — which, in my day, was called Grade 13 — was all for nothing.
By the way, even when high school officially took five years, some students still came back to improve their grades. We called that Grade 14.
You had to party real hard to wind up in Grade 14.

It was a classic sr govt/consultant employee report that will manage the expectation of the public
I found all this stuff and it depends on what you want…no fight it out special interest groups and then the govt can save the day
Dan, I’m a Grade 14 attendee. I graduated on time at the end of Grade 13 but needed some grade 13 math courses to apply for the degree I wanted at Western so I stayed an extra year. There was an unfortunate inability to get a passing grade the first time I took grade 12 math. I didn’t party that hard but my brain had trouble with the high level math when I’d been spending my summers working in my dad’s business which didn’t have any practical applications for those math concepts.
I only heard brief snippets of the report on the 6:00 news last night. When I took Grade 13, we had to buy our own text books so I don’t think his reccomendations are that far fetched. The only caveat I’d add is that the charges should apply only for those who return to enhance their grades, vs. those who are short of the credits needed to graduate.
The one thing I can say about Grade 14 is that it helped me get a lot of the partying out of my system. I was 20 when I went to UWO and by then understood the importance of working hard in University. By the time I went (at age 20), I’d seen many former high school classmates flunk out by partying too much. So, I’m actually a believer in the extra year as a maturing process.
Am I surprised by the Drummond report? No. Do I agree with the Drummond report? No.
I get we have to save money but cutting out things like the Robarts schools are deplorable. But hey, that’s politics. It’s kind of like what’s happening in London….
…Incredibly, there is virtually NO mention in the “Drummond Report” of one the most wasteful boondoggles in not just Ontario’s, but Canada’s, history – i.e., the Ontario Liberal’s so called “Green Energy” initiative. That glaring omission tells me this so called “report” is nothing but a Liberal propaganda tool, paid for by the Liberal govt (with our tax dollars) with strict instructions to Mr. Drummond to “steer clear” of the Green Energy program. As such, the “Drummond Report” has no credibility. Rather it is nothing but (…ironically) just another example of wasteful spending (to the tune of $150,000 plus expenses paid to Drummond to “create” the report). In other words, just more “same ol, same ol” liberal mentality of tax and spend. …Query how pathetic the Ontario voting public is to keep on voting into power these drunken sailor big tax dollar spenders. …’Cause, man – I don’t get it. Can anyone explain to me why the citizens of this province keep voting these buffoons in? …A case perhaps of “Mass Hysterical Sadomasochism”? …Must be – there simply is no other rationale explanation.
@Joe Taxpayer, thank you for your comment.
“Can anyone explain to me why the citizens of this province keep voting these buffoons in?”
Till unions are DRASTICALLY REDUCED in numbers in provincial and municipal levels from garbage too police departments, liberal party will continue buying votes and prosper using our tax dollars.
Till than the remaining smarts can move out or wait for another Greece happening throughout Ontario.
Closures of EMD and Ford plant are NOT FAST ENOUGH and are the ONLY WAY TO REDUCE THEIR CONTROLLING NUMBERS.
PS: Please, understand we were in favor of unions but, NOT OUT OF CONTROL UNIONS.
