Family Day

- February 20th, 2012

I hope you all had a pleasant Family Day.

You gotta love the politicians who issued Family Day messages this weekend, like Joe Fontana and Dalton McGuinty. Thank goodness is it’s up to us as individuals, and not the government, to invest holidays like Family Day with meaning.

Of course, I can’t blame McGuinty for harping on Family Day. It’s one of the few things he gave us that some people actually like.

You know, I have to admit, I enjoyed the day. We got stuff done (installed Turbo Tax; we are trying it for the first time this year and replaced the celing fixture in our front hallway with a new one) and had some relaxation time. I think it also helped that the sun was out so it was a bright day. Had it snowed/rained or been bitter cold, we might have felt differently.
Plus, we had tha added bonus of mail delivery on a “holiday”. I was surprised by that last part. It reminded me of the Canada Post lockout/strike last summer that screwed up delivery of a couple of CDs I had to get re-shipped. If the gvt. forced them back to work but they still don’t get Family Day off, does that mean the Posties are still working under their old contract? Once they got forced back to work, I never did hear any outcome of their labour dispute.

nflfan: Isn’t the discrepancy that Family Day is a provincial holiday and Canada Post is a federal Crown Corporation?

Hey Dan – I got an extra long weekend as we took Friday off too and headed up to the cottage. My mom’s side of the family go every Family Day weekend up north and spend the weekend relaxing, drinking, ice fishing, snowmobilling, playing cards, etc. This trip – like always – was a blast :)

    I enjoyed it.

What I do find peculiar about it is that people feel obligated to get out and do something “Family Day-ish” as though spending an extra day off with the people you love at home isn’t enough.
