Fair attendance slumps

- September 23rd, 2010

There’s a story on lfpress.com today about how attendance at the Western Fair was down sharply this year.

Only 178,110 people attended, compared to 217,987 last year and 277,010 in 2000.

In fact, the numbers have been declining steadily over the last decade.

Fair bosses admit something must be done, but they don’t seem to be aware that the foofaraw over admission for handicapped folks may have hurt their event. All that negative publicity must have had an impact. It’s also not clear if they’re contemplating cutting prices.

I have an idea.

Forget cutting admission. Why not make the fair free? Why not stop charging for admission and let folks park for nothing?

Before you reject the idea out of hand, consider this: Free works for downtown festivals like Home County and Sunfest, so why not apply the same model to the Western Fair? If it can work in Victoria Park, why not at the fairgrounds?

They can still charge for midway rides and such, but why not make admission and parking free of charge?

The Fair brain trust is going to have to make some kind of drastic change — and soon. If they continue as in the past, it won’t be long before the Fair goes out of business.

I apologize in advance for the unfortunate mental image

Remember how I mentioned I went to Sunfest Saturday with M’Lady?

Well, I stupidly forgot to bring a hat. You may recall it was a very hot, very sunny day.

I had just shaved my head the day before (which I do about twice a week), so I had literally zero coverage. Big mistake.

So now I’m sitting here at my desk and my skull is peeling.

I’ll spare you the details, but they involve lots of bits of dead skin.

The result is that I’m ultra-paranoid now. I haven’t been outside since without a hat. And I swear I won’t go outside again uncovered.

When I bumped into nflfan and his lovely wife, they suggested I should buy a hat at one of the Sunfest booths. Foolishly, I ignored that idea.

So do as I say, not as I did. Don’t forget to wear a hat on these hot summer days!

You will help ward off sun cancer, and spare yourself some embarrassment as well.

Best fest?

This post is in response to a comment from blog reader kmcmillan21, below.

Of the approaching weekend, she writes:

Planning on going to my sister’s house-warming bbq and to Sunfest with the family and some friends! By the way- Sunfest is the best summer festival in London in my opinion- I love it!

So the gauntlet has officially been thrown down!

As I’ve blogged before, M’Lady and I are Ribfest people. It is the one festival we attend every year without fail. I love the ribs and I enjoy the crowds, it’s attracts a different kinda crowd because the whole point is to eat.

I’m not saying it’s perfect — for example, the music isn’t the greatest. But if your goal is to sample the best ribs around, it achieves its goals. The main complaint seems to be that it’s expensive.

To me, the fact that you have to pay means it keeps away the triflers and rubby-dubs. That’s a good thing.

I know there are a lot of Sunfest fans out there, so I’d love to hear from you. I also invite Home County defenders and others to weigh in.

Let’s get this discussion started!
