Climategate

- December 1st, 2009

My column on the weekend was one of a handful in Canada to expose the scandal involving Britain’s University of East Anglia and the revelation that evidence contradicting man-made global warming has been covered up, information supporting the theory made up and editors willing to publish articles on both sides of the argument fired for daring to be balanced and objective.

What is extraordinary is how few other columns and articles have appeared in the press and how little attention this story is receiving on television and radio. Imagine if hackers had found hundreds of e-mails discrediting global warming skeptics – the story would dominate for weeks if not months.

There is increasing evidence that journalists at the BBC, for example, have been told to downplay the issue and a columnist for a major Australian newspaper who wrote about climategate was stunned to pick up the newspaper to find a different column, from years earlier, published in place of his latest one!

This is serious, worrying stuff and should be of concern even to global warming believers if they genuinely care about freedom of speech.

But somehow I don’t anticipate much protest from that quarter. It’s odd how people who claim to care so passionately about the planet frequently seem to care little about the people who live on it. Climate change zealots tend to exhibit an intolerance and aggression that would make anyone question their cause.

This isn’t about saving the world but imposing on the world’s population an agenda, a conversation and a way of life that satisfies the usual types who obsess about telling others how to live and behave.

How right you are Michael, but one must remember that climate change is an industry with thousands of so called experts making an excellent living from this lie and as many politicians have built their reputation supporting it.It is too much for these people to admit their dishanesty and lack of due dilligece.we have not been able to count on the BBC and CBC for the truth for many years so don’t expect them to start now.
It is up to columnists like yourself to keep hammering away with the truth.

  2. M Anderson says:

The old saying “The bigger the lie, the more they believe it”. Many are incapable of admitting to themselves that maybe, perhaps, possibly they’ve been duped by propoganda. This is the new religion of the decade. A pretty hard nut to crack.

The media’s lack of coverage of the biggest scientific scandal in recent history is quite disturbing.

  3. GaryP says:

Very good column. Please keep writing about this issue. Thanks.

  4. There’s nothing extraordinary about the lack of attention this has received, Michael. What is actually extraordinary is that journalists aren’t trashing their reputations by leaping aboard the latest rightwing fraud this time. I guess all the faux smoking “WMDs have been found in Iraq” guns, the birther nonsense and teabagger shenanigans have finally smartened them up.

  5. Elizabeth Maybenot says:

Nice to find you again Mr. Coren. You are never afraid to speak the truth. Are there any links available re;the stories getting switched for older ones? That is interesting.

  6. Andre says:

    Excellent op-ed Michael.
I have seen this Robert McLelland guy who commented here on a number of blogs. Utterly incapable of making any coherent argument, but rather resorting to name calling and trashing anyone who dares even thinking of criticising man-made global warming (or Warmergate as Mark Steyn calls it).
He is the epidemy of a left-wing person who uses slogans, insults, trash language to crush dissent.
Rather than having the intellectual honesty to respond to the current revelations with facts, he is now in complete panic mode as it is becoming increasingly obvious that the entire global warming scam is finally unravelling.
Poor Robert. His entire value system is collapsing from under his clay feet.
    Sad. Very sad.

  7. Dave says:

    Mclelland,
I guess you’d know all about getting tea-bagged by us evil right wingers since it happens to you on a daily basis.

  8. michael.coren says:

Thanks for all this. Robert – are you the Robert from York whom I know? If so, you can do better than this. Hitler liked red wine, I Iike red wine, thus I’m a Nazi! Poor logic. If I’m a right-wing journalist it’s odd I opposed the Iraq War from the start, even opposed sanctions on Iraq. I’m also against the death penalty, want to forgive Third World debt. Hardly reactionary. WMDs were a vulgar, nasty hoax. But the UEA material is real. To lump all of these issues in together only muddies the waters of what is in fact a clear lake of dishonesty from some in the global warming community.

  9. That’s a bizarre rant in response to a comment that had nothing to do with you, Mr. Coren. Let me rephrase what I said. This isn’t getting much attention simply because it’s just another outrage du jour that the right has become infamous for manufacturing and journalists–which you are not–are finally wising up after being suckered so many times in the past. Face reality, Michael. The right has become the boy who cried smoking gun.

  10. michael.coren says:

How funny. It’s neither a rant nor bizarre but simply a polite and questioning response – interesting how people use the word “rant” when what they really mean is that they disagree with something. Nothing of any substance to which I need react but I would like to know if you’re the politics prof from York who was on my TV show a few years ago. Surely not. A simple yes or no will suffice.

  11. Owen says:

I’ve been watching your show the past few years and am utterly amazed such frank, open, honest discussions about pretty well anything are allowed on Canadian airwaves. It’s a wonder the mainstream media haven’t complained to the CRTC and have you shut down – you are making them look like a bunch of dopes. When I want to listen to adults discuss adult topics frankly, openly and intelligently I turn on your show. When I want to listen to asinine jibberish (which isn’t often) I’ll turn on the CBC or CTV or Global channels. You are the best show on the telly Mr.Coren. And your columns in the paper aren’t too shabby either.

As for global warming, anyone with a half a brain knows it’s a fraud, but that leaves out most of the MSM doesn’t it.

Great to know you have a blog btw ! I stumbled across it by accident.

  12. I’m not the York professor and there is something to react to; my explanation for why most journalists aren’t willing to risk their reputation by reporting about the emails. Pundits like you can do it simply because if you’re wrong you merely shrug your shoulders and move on to the next topic. Journalists however, can lose their jobs when their credibility is shattered; ask Dan Rather about that.

  13. Jim Roberts says:

Well Mr. Coren you repeated your line about your so-called opposition to the Iraq war. Sorry Michael, I listened to your show quite often over the years, your opposition to the Iraq war was shall we say limp at best and you were quite happy to lob personal insults against many celebrities who spoke out against the war. Michael Moore to give one example. As far the leaked emails go you make some good points and the issue needs to be given more attention. If proponents of Climate change theory believe in their ideas they should be out there front and centre taking questions.

  14. michael.coren says:

Goodness, blogging is fun. Thanks for the kind words. As for Robert, thanks for confirming who you are not. Re Jim, read my columns and essays, listen to my broadcasts again. I opposed the Iraq war before it was fashionable. I remember hosting a one-hour panel on radio opposing sacntions; before the usual types even knew where Iraq was. Insulting Michael Moore? Of course. He’s a fraud and a hypocrite. Famous people can’t escape the truth just because they’re famous. I know how Moore has treated peeople who have worked for him – believe me, this is not a man who lives out his politics. There are plenty of liberal celebs who are kind, generous and consistent. He’s not one of them. Thanks again for all of the comments.

  15. C.H. says:

Thank you Michael, you’re scientifically illiterate point of view is much appreciated!

  16. michael.coren says:

Dear C.H, sorry to be a pedant but irony is my thing. Best not to accuse people of illiteracy when you confuse “you’re” with “your”. LOL, as the young people say.

  17. C.H. says:

Michael, I didn’t accuse you of illiteracy, I accused of being scientifically illiterate, and since GW is a science, what makes you so confident that you know what you’re talking about?

  18. michael.coren says:

I’ve said several times that I’m not an expert and have no idea about who is correct concerning man-made global warming. Point is, I’m rare amongst journalists in that I admit that climate change is not my field. Then again, it’s not the field of most people who opine about it; with all due respect I should think that includes you. My argument is that all sides should be heard,as with all important subjects. You, however, began by throwing out insults – which is pretty typical of climate change types. Forgive me, but if someone can’t master basic grammar and spelling it does lead one to doubt their grasp of complex science.

  19. C.H. says:

I disagree, I don’t believe anyone without a science background deserves to be heard on the issue of GW anymore than I deserve to be teaching english, that includes famous non-scientists like Al Gore and Lord Monckton.

Scientists should be allowed to duke it out without all the political spin going on, from the left or the right.

  20. Monica says:

Always a pleasure Sir, and this is one of the few blogs where the font is readable taa for that.

Alas what can I say those that carefully constructed Global Warming and then Climate Change are not interested in the environment, they are interested in the profit the industries they constructed shall reap via Carbon Taxes or VATs (value added tax) and scientific research grants ala galore. Every single government that jumps on board stands to make billions in the next decade, the UN is the front man for the scam. The politicians have already made up their minds in Canada, the best we can hope for is removing them from office once they’ve sold Canada’s soul to the Global Goverance/Greed Crowd in Hopenhagen.

I have no issue with cleaning up our air, soil and water but Climate Change is about profit for those involved in the scam. Research scientist have made literally millions in grants, and if they can keep the ship afloat shall lead the Global Governance/Greed bandwagon. Global Leaders will amass vast amounts of our money to commence their socialist experiments, alas Europe is broke from their failed socialist scams.

I see you met Robert, ignore him he’s a troll.

  21. Glenn says:

The debate over global warming is unfortunately too important to be left in the hands of grant-happy scientists who couldn’t balance a chequebook if their lives depended on it. So-called solutions that will cost the world economy hundreds of billions of dollars for unprovable benefits need to be aired out and explained to those of us who don’t carry pocket protectors. A real scientist would relish and meet that challenge.

  22. Owen says:

The alarmists were anything but scientific as attested to by what we see in their emails and data. If the alarmists had been above board and shared their data and had it been properly peer reviewed years ago then we all would have been better off but their agenda was to find global warming no matter what, even if the facts didn’t correspond to their hypothesis. There is very little science left in global warming, it’s all politics and coverups now, thus Micheal Coren is very well qualified to discuss the topic, on tv, in the papers and here. Take you elitist views back to the ivory towers of academia C.H. Real people deserve a say now.

  23. Ed says:

I’m no scientist but I know how to read a theremoter.
And mine has not been going up for the past ten years. Neither has the one at at East Anglia. But the “scientists” there tried to hide that fact.

  24. Ed says:

    That should read thermometer.

  25. Gary says:

At first it was “Global-Warming” until that scam no longer worked once the Bogus chart for the Hockey-Stick was exposed as a fraud.
Then it became “Climate-Change” which already occurs by the Earth’s 23.5 degree tilt on the Axis as it revolves around the Sun to give us the 4-seasons.
BUT, this fraud was exposed becase NASA’s own evidence for Solar activity has a Graph detailing the Earth changes to the temperatures that lag the Solar flairs from the time it take to reach Earth . And now I read that Al Gore won’t be in Copenhaggen for his oration which looks like the house of cards has collapsed.

I knew something was up when the NDP started to tie CO2 into the Pollution issues for smog when CO2 keeps Humans alive when Plants and Trees intake it to expel Oxygen .
Please don’t try to tell me that the “Deniers” were Psychic’s back in the 70′s and filled the Schools with Teachers asserting the old theory that Plants convert CO2 to Oxygen while Humans burn-up the Oxygen and the Lungs expel the CO2 .

    BTW
Al Gore has more to worry about if the Ice melts and the oceans rise 20 feet as he told children (who now fear drowning some time in the future), Gore should ask a Scientist to calculate how much weight the 20 feet of water will adds to Earth’s angular momentum since the Equator spins at 1000 MPH .
Plus, the Moon causes the tides from the pull of gravity and just wait until all the water mass drags on the Moons orbital plane to slow it down.

The Apollo 11 mission killed the ‘Man On The Moon’ myth, and growing-up killed all the rest like Jack frost,Santa,Mr.Sandman,Easter Bunny, and the tooth Fairy.
Today we see how emails now killed the AGW myth and exposed Al Gore for what he really is , a failed Politician that went to Hollywood to be in movies. Maybe since Reagan left Hollywood to be the President….Al Gore can take over the Bonzo series, I’m sure PETA won’t be offended as long as Bonzo can handle Gore’s antics and the ‘Barbara Hall’ annoying speech pattern .

  26. Jay Currie says:

    Welcome to the blogosphere Michael!

The legacy media are sitting on this story simply because they have no way of redeeming years of “The World will End Next Tuesday” stories in the face of the over egged evidence.

    You’ve nailed it. Keep hammering.

  27. Hank says:

When will we get to read the UN emails on climate change?
(About the same time we get to vote for the UN president I suspect.)

When will we get to read the White House emails on climate change?

When will we get to read the Suzuki Foundation emails on climate change?

  28. Arn Hatfield says:

It is not an either/or proposition folks. I have long felt that both camps in the GW debate are just flip sides of the same coin.

Both have an agenda and both are guilty of selective perception.

The real issue is a rapidly deteriorating natural enviroment in terms of quality of air, quality of water, toxic residue, disappearing green space and animal habitat, disappearing (and irreplaceable) farm land and the rapid extinction of a host of plants and animals species on a daily basis.

A planet which is rapidly losing its ability to support other animal species will not much longer support man.

Focus on cleaning up our natural environment and save your GW debates for the retirement home.

  29. Andre says:

When reading the comments from people like C.H., it is obvious that the Global Warming people are in extreme fear that the raw data which (supposedly) underpins their belief system will be revealed publicly. Both the CRU and even NASA have consistently for years now refused to publish their data. Requests for it under Freedom Of Information acts in various countries have been systematically obstructed. I would ask someone like C.H. a simple question…why?
Other scientists publish their raw and processed data in journals, periodicals, theses, papers etc… But Global Warming “scientists” don’t. What we thought was data that they published turned out to have been “smoothed” and “edited” with the single-minded goal of illustrating a hypothesis (raising temperatures) which is not supported by facts (world temperature has be stable or even decreasing in the last 10 years).
Politicians get crucified when they are found to fudge numbers. I am pretty sure C.H. would be upset if his doctor was shown to have fudged numbers.
So why is he so blindly cutting Global Warming “scientists” so much slack? Why the absolute blind faith in scientists whose work and funding would dry up if their theory was proven wrong?

  30. Gary says:

I just watch a CNN report about Climategate and what a farce to deny the evidence.
But the evidence I’m looking at is that the “Scientists” themself talk about DATA omissions or DATA Additions to skew the Graphs. The CNN host mocked the Climategate as a Denier based push to back their theory, but what was amazing was the host using the term “Alleged” emails or “Alleged” facts on Earth’s Temperature records to back the AGW claims.

Here’s my problem Michael, if the CNN host chooses to mock people if they doubt the Global-Warming evidence for the “Alleged” tampering of DATA to alter climate records…..then why would CNN expect me to trust them when
THEY doubt the Emails and use “Alleged” evidence .
It can’t be both ways for CNN, either they doubt the Fudged DATA and Emails that were held back to oppose the U.K. FOIA to expose the Evidence by Law since the Scientists used Tax-Dollars in good-faith to DO NO HARM wit hthe funds.

  31. Don Gunn says:

The Al Gores of this world claim an intense interest in the state of the planet, but not one iota of concern for the truth on the subject, the recent discovery of what appears to be a rather sinister cover up and fudging of the figures regarding the true global temperatures, would mean saying “we were wrong”
on the part of all those who having been crying the sky is falling.

  32. Stewart Morrison says:

agw is now ‘big business’ it has all the major players in place, oil, auto, manufacturing, and of course the political end to wrap up the biggest and best swindle of all time,to make money from not only zero product, but from the thin air itself! Of course all the greedy, including politicians, wants in on this, and if you look at who owns the media in north america, they certainly want this lie to bear fruit, and they will…all the while as we can only watch as our money goes…away….! Not so much to Al Gore, yes he owns the clearing house for all cap and trade deals, and stands to reap,[rape?] billions on this scam,I personally can’t believe that a man who twice failed university science, can dream up such an amazing deception! No, I think there are ‘other players’ involved, and seemingly, not to invite, discussion or argument

  33. maryj says:

    Agreed Stewart…–
yes there are some problems in the environment it is obvious and after millions of years yes the planet is getting tired.. kind of normal dont you think? Yes countries lands have been raped and not reforested and yes there is intense greed in multi-nationals.. but I would like to turn the spotlight on those who bear much responsibility for those suffering most from a polluted earth – the poor..—- they can’t go anywhere.. ‘the rich can and do’….— However I would like to centre on the big banks and bankers…
    - they continue to steal obscene amounts of money… and charge obscene rates to we middle of the road city poor….
If the banks were made to give even 1% of those entire profits to the poor… we wouldnt have poor.. we could reforest.– there would be enough for everyone..– so the problem my friends is not “just” about the environment.. the problem is about what is happening ‘or not’ inside each man and woman who ‘could help’ but ‘turn the other way’..– in their lives the crumbling of our civilization….
When Einstein was asked about what weapons would be used ‘in the last war’ (that would come about) he answered ‘machettes’..
    he wasnt kidding…

  34. Stewart Morrison says:

Thank you maryj, you have so eloquently described the ‘real’ challenge of our existence, that is simply to,live within our means, first!,and to live with each other,in peace,so that we can advance so far as we can only dream,oh yes the world needs a rallying point, but not one that is at the least, ‘suspect’ to fraud as agw. You see it’s ‘our’ human nature now, to ‘get all we can’,we spill enough to feed a third world country!Climate changes on its own without the sky falling, social change…well there you go,why spend on things we can’t change,or even alter, when we have the means, and the intelligence,to give ourselves a place to thrive, and enjoy! life IS a gift, our home is a gift, not a profit opportunity, not a reason for any war,or any religion to stake a claim on what we all own as a species,as well as all other species,we are failing ourselves, like I tell my kids,we got colour tv…we really need to do better than that!

  35. mamazee says:

First of all – Hooray that you are now blogging! I am a huge Micheal Coren fan, and this is such an accessible medium!

Second of all – so glad to hear a little balance, after having to turn off the radio while Anna Maria Tremonti was interviewing some “stooge” (as my children would say) on CBC. The interview went basically like this “So, there is nothing to be concerned about?” “No,nothing to see here. As you were” “Oh, okay!”…

Although some commenters on this thread seem to think only the scientists should have a say, the truth is that we, the taxpayers, will be paying for whatever remedies they recommends for the doomsday scenario they paint to our leaders. This is a form of democracy, and there is an obligation on our part to be as informed and to play devil’s advocate, especially as the media is not doing this job. We pay no matter what – at least make sure we don’t sell our children’s future for the fears of a vocal few…

  36. michael.coren says:

Thanks Mamazee. I’m enjoying this. The CBC having an agenda? Goodness me, you could knock me down with a government grant!

  37. Heckubiss says:

The biggest mistake the environmentalists did was pin their hopes on global warming / climate change. I think we can all agree that smog is a bad thing. Understandably they wanted to make it a global issue instead of a local one. Unfortunately the cracks in the global warming theory are now starting to show. My fear is that more and more people may join the anti-global warming bandwagon and leaders will lose focus on the issue which will bring us back to more smog days for everyone.

Oh, and I too am a huge fan of the show. Michael offers a different perspective from MSM and stimulates debate and discussion on the various issues. Oh and Michael if you are reading this, there is no need to be jealous of Bill Maher. I am a fan of his too. Sure he is not as intellectually rigorous as you are. He caters to a different audience at a different time slot. At the end of the day, he too stimulates discussion and debate imo.

  38. Peter Stockland says:

Good column, Michael, and congratulations for distinguishing between the science of global warming and political manipulation of the issue of global warming. They’re not the same thing at all. The latter neither affirms nor negates the former. There is one figure in the global warming debate that should be given very close scrutiny. It’s the reported 20,000 attendees at the Copenhagen conference. If that figure is true, if 20,000 people have the feedbag on for one global warming conference, we would be wise to be highly sceptical of every future statement about global warming that is not expressed in strictly scientific, and ideally purely mathematical, language.

  39. Moe says:

I hope, due to this scandal, that I will never have to hear the term “tipping point” ever again.

  40. richard says:

    dear michael,
if global warming is not the fault of industry, chemicals, polluntants and so forth it must be the fault of those cigarrette smokers. we seem so good at chasing them for contaminating the air the problem should be easy to remedy and we can live and raise are children in a pollutant free world.not unless someone tells us mississauga has weapons of mass destruction and we are attacked.

  41. Stewart Morrison says:

Peter,we already know what will come out of Copenhagen ‘the science is settled’ as far as our vote hungry and tax hungry politicians are concerned, what we don’t know yet is the economic damage that will come out of this,I’m sorry but I gotta call a spade here, BULLSHIT!. There is no stopping this now,too many fingers in the pie, all wanting their greedy little shares, face it ,we are about to be taxed into a third world existance, and we deserve it,we let these sudo science guys get away with all the marbles without so much as a wimper, and the silent majority…looses…again to the uber vocal ‘special interest’ people, who were suckered into this royal flush of all scams!

  42. Toni Cameron says:

Hi Michael..remember me..I am the lady that wants U clonned!! UR so,sooo intelligent. My take on this subject is this Michael. The powers that be don’t want us “citizens” to know the truth! It is no different than the DoomsDay prediction. If the truth was told Michael, would we commoners buy shit,go to work, give a damn? As far as Al Gore goes, he is only in it for the money. He had to do something when he lost the election. Don’t stop Michael.. UR logic will win out.. and this is a little quote from my beloved mother, who God called Home way too soon..”Remember,paper LOVES ink!” I look forward to following U on Canoe.. as I believe I was one of UR 1st followers on FB.UR Loyal and Faithful FAN..

  43. Thomas says:

Often, when I hear about climate change, it’s connected to methane/ cow emissions(don’t scientists have more important things than cow farts to deal with?). Because I can care about the environment and don’t make a dime from the anti-cow fart industry I tend to look at the larger picture. For example, why are scientists not spending as much time worried about the build up of plastic waste:

    greatgarbagepatch.org

or why thousands of sharks are brutally, unnessasarily(sp?)killed without media attention while the comparitively small seal hunt gets too much attention to the point of celebrities jumping on the bandwagon.

Plastic is doing more harm to the environment than cow farts, and sharks are more important to the global food chain then seals.

  44. Mike says:

    Hello!!

The Climate Change gang has been caught using their own form of intelligent design to modify data and make it say what they want it to say. They deny intelligent design but feel quite free to use it. “Me thinks thou dost protest too much”.

This modus operandi is very familiar.

Ben Stein’s recent movie Expelled was dismissed without merit by the usual suspects in academia. View “Expelled” and compare the methods used to dismiss intelligent design to those used to dismiss inquiry into climate change conclusions. The evidence chain, the style of peer review and the attitude towards those who disagree are very similar. Is this branch of academia infallible? It is nice to see them caught with their pants down. Religious fundamentalism for the most part holds its fundamentals up for clear inspection. This group is like a mad dog that stalks you from behind. If your butt is sore, watch your back.

    Here’s a good laugh.

Check out this “Scientist” from a TV show who asserted the view that Humans can’t control the weather.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFN3fGuSSlg
Note the map opposite to what Al Gore claims at the 5:30 mark, then take a guess who the man is at the 6:05 mark.
Yes folks,he’s none other than the thuggish goon at COP-15 who used the U.N. security to stop Phelim AcAleer from asking about the Climategate emails that confirm fraud.

    Here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQOJCAL-OJg

That was Stanfords Prof.Stephen Schneider back then as a Ice-age alarmist ,and now a Global Warming alarmist who now blames CO2 along with Humans being the big polluters.

Myself, I trust Spock’s version of the Ice-age more than Al Gore’s baby-talk with pictures and charts designed for morons.

Follow the money and see how fast a “Scientists” can be bought.

BTW it’s a 3-part video on YouTube but you get my point about the Adadge ” Time wounds all heels ” .

  48. Reynold says:

My irony meter broke when reading the section I’ve excerpted below. Can anyone guess why?

    ========
Climate change zealots tend to exhibit an intolerance and aggression that would make anyone question their cause.

This isn’t about saving the world but imposing on the world’s population an agenda, a conversation and a way of life that satisfies the usual types who obsess about telling others how to live and behave.
    =====

That last statement is what broke that meter.

Anyway, for some evidence about climate change…

    http://www.realclimate.org/index.php/archives/2007/05/start-here/

Long and boring but probably useful.

    Examples:

  49. Reynold says:

Not to get too off topic here, sorry…but Mike, when you said that:

“Ben Stein’s recent movie Expelled was dismissed without merit by the usual suspects in academia”

    uh, no.

It was dismissed with a LOT of merit!

    http://www.expelledexposed.com/index.php/the-truth

Do some reading and checking up on both sides. You’ve evidently heard from one side, so I’m presenting the other.

Their linking Hitler and evolution was really off:

    http://www.expelledexposed.com/index.php/the-truth/hitler-eugenics

Look carefully at how Stein misquoted Darwin from his book “The Descent of Man” when it came to Eugenics.

  50. Gary says:

    Reynold:

Interesting sight with really neat Al-Gore sytle pictures for the dummies.

I’m still waiting for the UN or IPCC to mention the SUN as part of it , and then include Astronomy experts and Astro-physicists to explain to Al Gore what that BIG round shiny ball is in the sky and why it’s cooler at 2:00 am then 2:00 pm .

I predict that in 6 months we will see Global Warming and then followed by Global cooling and so on.
