I am as mad as hell. We moan on and on about injustice, poverty, suffering, and racism, but what about the turtles? Yes, what about the turtles? Occupiers and settlers took away their aboriginal homeland, and turned it into some giant capitalist and environment-hating theme park. These settlers exploit, use, and abuse, and dare to still refer to the occupied territory as Turtle Island, even though they have ethnically cleansed the rightful owners of this creator-given soil. Turtles have lost their culture and their dignity, which is why they turn to alcohol, family abuse, crime, suicide, gigantic amounts of government dependency, incest, and drugs. Turtle Island must be returned to its original inhabitants, and turtle pride and power must be at the foundation of any progressive policy.
“Native, white, straight and gay, let the turtles have their day!” Say it loud, say it loud, say it loud.
Or they could write a book titled “Why Turtles Are Right”. You know, set the record straight and all.
But do we give it back to the snapping turtles? Box turtles? Painted turtles? They will have to fight amongst themselves for the right to rule the Island. Unless some turtles are more equal than others.
I cry for the turtles! I cry for their turtle homeland! Here, where the turtles once roamed freely, there is only sand, and trees, and little huts with recliners in front, and tables with drinks on them!
These drinks have little umbrellas, sure, and they’re very tasty . . ….but the turtles are gone! O great turtle, open your shell of compassion and receive these turtle that are no more! HEAR MY TURTLE CRY!aaaaaahhhhhHHHHHhhhhrrrnnnggg!
How imperialist and amphibianly hegemonic of you, Michael. Don’t you realize that the original inhabitants of “Turtle Island” were the ladybugs whose land the turtles occupied?
There isn’t a piece of land in the world where the current inhabitants didn’t displace someone else at one point in its history. “Turtle Island” proponents are generally historically ignorant folk who imagine a unified, pre-European First Nations culture, when in fact there were many native peoples who were frequently at war with one another. The Europeans exploited those conflicts to their own benefit and formed alliances with one or another native groups, before turning on them. But the natives were willing allies with the Europeans when it came to fighting their enemies of different tribes.
But the funny part is that “Turtle Island” isn’t really a native term. It was created in the 1970′s by some activists to describe North America because it had a ‘native ring’ to it. Of course the activists were not native. The natives were too smart to ever think that this continent is an island.
I say we give the planet back to the protons! they were here first! how dare we take their land!
Oh won’t somebody PLEASE think about the turtles!
So Greg is Pro-Proton, I shall remain Neutronic.
But then again, who gives a Quark what any of us think, even though we occupy a majority of the mass.
@Al the Fish: Electrons occupy only a small fraction of the mass, but they get the most reaction.
Who cares ! Just as long as someone is made to feel really guilty about it.
Now that the evidence has shown how the Polar bear population is booming well above the rate for humans. I noticed in the Keele Bloor area that GREENPEACE.ca is now posting claims that the Caribou are the new endangered animals we will miss when they are gone.
Lets see, we had the Ice-Age claims in the 80′s and then the OZONE layer crisis and then a 0-Population growth crusade to safe mother Earth from us. But the latest was Global-Warming that has now Morphed into the Climate-Change( I do believe in it because it’s colder at 1:00am then 1:00pm and it doesn’t rain in the Winter) and now the doom&gloom snake-oil salesmen abandoned the Polar bears to now exalt the Caribou above humans.
Wow, so the newest crisis in Canada is the Turtle population which explains why Snapping Turtles are so angry.
Canada needs to fund a study for the Rainbow Coalition to expose the high suicide rates among teen Turtles that are Homosexuals being rejected by Catholic Turtle District School Boards (C-TDSB) non-inclusive Policy in the holy book given to them by the Turtle-God to Shelldon (Peace Be Upon Him) the gifted one .
Check it out….the Caribou posters are all over that area and the web link is for Green Peace.
Michael, were you Raptured today?
Gary said: “Now that the evidence has shown how the Polar bear population is booming well above the rate for humans.”
The polar bear population is booming! You read that anonymously written piece in the NP, didn’t you?
Truly ironic and pathetic. When the Inuit say that they’re seeing more polar bears on land, you trot that out as evidence that ACC is a hoax, but when natives make a land claim, you tell them to shut up.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service states, “. . . extensive scientific studies have indicated that the increased observation of bears on land is a result of changing distribution patterns and a result of changes in the accessibility of sea ice habitat.”

C.H.
When the Inuit say there are more polar bears you tell them to shut up and when the natives make a land claim you say “sure, take as much of my neighbors land as you wish”.
Is that what makes you a better person?
Oh look, Rob knows how to reverse an argument like a thirteen year old and turn it into a completely false statement.
I just found a turtle today in my yard – it happens to be the same one from this picture! Does anyone know what kind of turtle this is????????
Audra,
Sorry, I don’t know the type of turtle but the jarring innocence of your question (backdropped against all the sarcasm above it) did make me smile.
“extensive scientific studies have indicated that the increased observation of bears on land is a result of changing distribution patterns and a result of changes in the accessibility of sea ice habitat.”
@ C.H.
Polar Bears are also staying on land because as the Human population and activity expands in the North the local dumps also expand.
I’ve seen “documentaries” on the CBC that claim “polar bears are increasingly forced to feed at the local dump because of the declining sea ice”. But I have to wonder, If I was a polar bear, would I spend days, and walk for miles trying to find a seal that I may or may not be quick enough to catch or would I just wander to the local dump for some left over KFC.
Not a difficult choice.
The red eye on that turtle—says it all.
Yeah, C.H. I am pretty clever. Thanks for noticing.
My statements are about as accurate as yours, so I guess we’re both awesome!!!
George, are you trying to suggest that bears are lazy and prefer an easy meal? Why if that were true they’d make a cartoon about how they like to steal picnic baskets with little buddies that have funny names like Boo boo.
I was just thinking, wouldn’t more polar bears mean more dead caribou (I assume bears eat them. But, like most greenpeacers I have no idea how Polar bears actually live and prefer to get my science from the U.S. government. Until that science concludes something I don’t like, then I remember that the U.S. government always lies for oil).
But since caribou are the new “polar bear” maybe we should all do what we can to protect them and get a bigger, gas guzzling SUV to make more global-warming-climate-change which will kill more polar bears and protect the precious, huggy, caribou from this menace.
Plus isn’t it nice that greenpeace doesn’t seem to care that with less ice, whales won’t get trapped in ice locks for months and be in constant danger of being killed by, yup, evil polar bears. Why no love for the whales?
I found the same turtle on the street. I saved it by being ran over a car and it was the same type of turtle in the picture, can someone tell me what kind it is?
it’s an eastern box turtle, they are awesome.
I see your point, we may not be able to give up the whole area for the turtles but we can at least give them a protected area free for human created “stuff”. give it a thought, give the turtles a thought.
Turtle soup is delicious.
