Liberal leadership race: Some details on the rules, please?

- June 13th, 2012

Following Bob Rae’s dramatic announcement this morning that he will not seek the permanent leadership of the Liberal Party of Canada, the party’s national board met by teleconference this evening. The big news? Leadership race vote will sometime in April 2013. Also notable tonight: Not a peep in terms of a news release, etc. about Rae’s decision although Liberal Party prez Mike Crawley did put this on Twitter to his 2,493 followers:

But if the party wants to get a leadership race going, shouldn’t it be announcing a few more details than what party prez Mike Crawley provided today? For example: How much can leadership candidates spend? It’s been more than year since Michael Ignatieff resigned as leader. Probably time to let potential leadership candidates know the ground rules for the campaign, don’ t you think? Or at least let potential candidates know when the party brass will set the ground rules?

Here’s what was posted by Crawley tonight at the party’s Web site (links by me):

I just got off the phone with our National Board of Directors and I want you to be the first to know about the outcome of our meeting. Tonight, we have narrowed down the possible date for the leadership vote to April 2013.

During last June’s Extraordinary Convention delegates voted to set the leadership vote between March 1 and June 30, 2013. Per our Party’s Constitution [pdf], it is the Board’s job to select a precise date. As such, we have tasked an Ad Hoc Leadership Vote and Expense Committee to focus its efforts on finding a suitable date in the month of April. This date will be confirmed over the summer.

We are now approaching a turning point for the Liberal Party of Canada. Soon, we will reach the end of our initial period of rebuilding following last year’s election result, and be entering a leadership contest we hope will inspire and engage tens of thousands, maybe even hundreds of thousands of Canadians. Our goal as a Board will be to encourage a competition that will be as open and inclusive as possible, that will offer Liberals a choice between the strongest possible candidates, and that will foster healthy debate at all levels of the Party.

Liberals stand for growth, hope and opportunity. And between now and April 2013, our members and any Supporter who registers for free on Liberal.ca will make our most important choice: who will represent us as the Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada. Then it will be up to us all to work together to elect the Leader we choose in 2013, Prime Minister of Canada in 2015. As a member, I know you may be eager to discuss this further.

Thank you.

Mike Crawley

President
