Seriously: We need you to write a letter to the CRTC for us

- February 2nd, 2013

I think the TV program I host on Sun News Network, Battleground, is unique and important to Canadians. Help us stay on air reporting on the political battles across the country:

Hi David, I’ve said this to you before on twitter but I’ll say it again here:
I can’t support your channel. I’ve seen Ezra Levant’s rants, including his violent anti-Gypsy one, and they often pit community against community, Canadian against Canadian – something distinctly un-Canadian. The fact he’s the face of the organization on this CRTC campaign tells me Sun values Ezra’s sensationalist, often libellous character-assassinations over real news and journalism.

I’m putting Canadian TV first – I’m not supporting the Sun network.

  2. Krysta Meekins says:

Hand-written letter done. Will mail it when I go to work on Monday. Keep up the good work David Akin and SNN!

  3. Dan Uren says:

Sorry, but I too will not stand up for what I think is the Canadian equivalent of Fox News. You have no idea of the meaning of fair and balanced.Your extremest views are just what is expected from a Quebec based company. We in the rest of Canada feel that if you cannot stand alone, then fail! Don’t expect the taxpayers to bail out yet another gazillionair with a ill conceived business plan. If you cannot generate enough revenue from advertisers to stay afloat, then pull the plug!

  4. Pat Armstrong says:

I would never support anyone associated with the media. In my opinion, they are arrogant and seem to think they have license to direct the world. There are some good journalists but the majority get up on their soapbox, rant and rave and tell us how to live. We have cancelled all newspapers as we can get coverage on a good news channel that reports the facts. I have a friend whose child was murdered a few years ago and the media still pester the family on the anniversary of the death, asking personal questions and hounding them when they are vulnerable and grieving. I am appalled and disgusted by their behaviour, which is not unique. I think a petition to get them fired and out of our lives would be a great idea.

  5. JIm Edwards says:

It’s time for the CRTC to start investigating the “uni-ethnicity” of media ownership in Canada.

  6. I have found Sun News’ coverage of aboriginal issues to often be very insightful and informative. Although sometimes the commentators get their facts a bit wrong or overstate, I believe they have helped to broaden the debate on this topic to a much healthier level than existed previously. I agree with Ezra Levant’s observation that journalists should be more than stenographers; they should ask tough questions, even if the interviewees are aboriginal.

I plan to mail my letter in support of Sun News’ application to the CRTC this afternoon.

  7. Zippy the Clown says:

Sun News needs to make a go of it in the free market. People aren’t watching them right now. Cable companies are not carrying Sun News at choice channel locations because they don’t see the profit in it. It’s not CBC’s fault. It’s not the CRTC’s fault. They need a product that more people will watch. The FOx News North business model doesn’t appear to be working.

  8. V. Grace says:

No thank you. The commentary seems biased and even at times misleading. I don’t think Canadians should be forced to take the channel and pay for it.

  9. Mike in Calgary says:

Sun News is great. The CBC is awful and needs to be defunded. I’d like to see the CBC’s billion given to Sun News instead.

  10. Ken Petkau says:

    Hello David,
I have sent in my letter of support for Sun News. Keep up the good work of presenting news and opinion that the media on the left ignores or will not report.

I also notice that a few of the comments to your request are content with the public being exposed to only the one sided views of CBC and CTV.

  11. Fred M says:

I am sick to death of lefties telling what I can and can<t watch on TV. A lefty friend of mine said that we really don't need their viewpoint. Its like abortion-there shouldn't be any other viewpoint except theirs.
When they remove the public subsidy from the CBC then I will agree that Sun should have to go it alone. Until then everyone should have same opportunity to be heard by Canadians.

  12. The Central Scutinizer says:

We live in a messed up world when people equate a cable bill with a tax. You don’t have to subscribe to cable TV people! It is a choice! The fact that many other channels are added to the basic subscription gives Sun the right to expect the same treatment. Even if you hate their views you should want them to have the right to express them. Wake up. It’s about freedom.

  13. Jody says:

Air Canada, PetroCan, CN, the gun registry, the long-form census, the wheat board…… come on Harper, time to stick a fork in the CBC. Say NO to state-sponsored media. Then the postal service….transfer payments….the state’s monopoly on health care….

  14. David O says:

From some comments it’s obvious the SunNews haters will be out in full force urging the CRTC to reject SNN’s application so I believe it’s imperative that folks who appreciate “the other side of the story” write in to show their support for SNN. My letter goes in the mail today.

  15. MaryLS says:

Response to Derek: Re: “and they often pit community against community, Canadian against Canadian – something distinctly un-Canadian.” Wrong, wrong. People are not “un-Canadian” because they disagree with one another. I think Canadians are grown up enough to tolerate different points of view.

The problem with news before Sun was that it was totally one-dimensional and failed to recognize different perspectives. A healthy society is one in which a diversity of views are readily available and vigorously debated. Ezra’s manner may be an acquired taste, but his analysis is rigorous and refreshing. Don’t watch if you don’t like him. I never watch Rick Mercer because I dislike him, but I would not claim he should be off the air because I disagree with his perspective.

  16. Stan says:

    Best thing on TV!
Was there anything more absurd than the lying idiots at CTV, CBC, and Global raving on about Chief Spence’s hunger strike?
Just how stupid do they think we are?

As for those bashing Sun, did Sun ever get a story as completely wrong as CBC and CTV et al did on the hunger strike fiasco?
If they will tell us an obviously fat woman is on day 40 of a hunger strike, what other whoppers are they telling us?

Thank God for SunTV, they were clearly the voice of reason and showed why we need them so desperately.

From the outright lies of Wafergate, to the absurd reports of 31,000 robocall complaints based on a bizarre far left website, to the All You Can Eat Hunger Strike, when has CBC and CTV ever told us the truth about anything?

I keep hearing about how SunTV lies, but when I call people on it and offer to name ten CBC lies for every lie they can find at SunTV, they always bow out.

CBC is all bent out of shape over the senator’s expenses, but when Liberal MP Judy Sgro ended up with an extra $100,000.00 from us in her condo rent scam, which she had to pay back, CBC did not run one single story on it.
    Not one.

As for Ezra’s antics, I’d rather see him tell me the truth dressed up as a pirate than listen to Peter Mansbridge lie to me in a 3 piece suit.

    Hunger strike?
    Jesus wept….

  17. Doug says:

Of course I am supporting Sun News. I cannot believe all the people on here complaining about some view other than the left wing slant of CBC and CTV. Like always, they have the right to “Not” watch, but they want everyone to not watch. That is UnCanadian! Finally there is another view point other than the MetroSexual, Univercity Prof., tree hugger view point. These are the people that are trying as hard as they can to stop anyone from having another side of things shown. These are the people with the biggoted closed minds. Why are they so affraid? Again, if you don’t like to watch Sun News, don’t but don’t stop me from watching if I want. If CNN can be a basic cable channel, there is absolutely no reasonable reason that a Canadian based, Canadian content broadcaster shouldn’t be given the exact same oppertunity. Unless you are closed minded and affraid of a 2 sided debate. Something that has been sorely missing in this country. Good luck Sun News. There are a lot of people very happy that you are around.

  18. Jody says:

“all you can eat hunger strike” LOL! That brought tears to my eyes.

  19. kelly says:

Sun News is the only News channel that is not Politically correct in my opinion. Pull CBC’s funding and let all stations compete on an equal footing. CBC is as un-Canadian as you can. Example of this is they worry more about the terrorists than Canada’s sons and daughters fighting them.
    Letter sent.

  20. Val says:

It would be very sad for Canada to lose SNN. We need their voice. Thanks Mr. Akin and the rest of you at SNN

  21. Donald Raper says:

Aavaz is trying to get people to petition against Sun News Network’s application to the CRTC. When you go on their site to speak on behalf of Sun News, I believe your posting will be counted as support for the anti-Sun News side. Sun News gives us the truth. The mainstream media are in the pockets of the plutocrats who own them. Encourage your friends to support Sun News Network’s application to the CRTC.

    Don
