Torontonians look forward to two things at the end of August: The opening of the CNE and what names will be on the Toronto International Film Festival’s star-studded guest list.
Well, the CNE is already open and today organizers released its talked about group of A-list actors and directors who will be breezing through Hogtown from Sept. 9-19.
For the first time in 20 years, Clint Eastwood will be coming to TIFF. After skipping T.O. with other notable fall releases like Mystic River and The Changeling, he will be in town supporting his new thriller Hereafter, (co-star Matt Damon, a festival regular, will also be making the trip).
Bruce Springsteen is also coming to support the World Premiere of The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town. In addition to promoting that movie, the Boss will take part in an onstage interview with actor Edward Norton as part of TIFF’s Mavericks programme.
The two Bills, Murray and Gates (yeah, the Microsoft guy), will be around as will a bevy of Oscar winners, including Nicole Kidman, Marion Cotillard, Hilary Swank, Helen Mirren, Robert De Niro, Jennifer Connelly and Javier Bardem.
Politically-minded director Ken Loach (The Wine That Shakes the Barley) will be pushed into the limelight when he takes part in an interview with TIFF favourite Michael Moore and Paul Laverty, while NBA great Steve Nash will show off his moves in the director’s chair with Into the Wind, his documentary on Terry Fox.
But it’s not all serious – this year’s TIFF will have its share of funny people breezing through town over 11 days next month. Will Ferrell, Zach Galifianakis, Sarah Silverman and Jon Lovitz are all skedded to make appearances.
So, breathe deeply TIFF fans – we’re in for a hectic September, and that’s a good thing.
