New Dark Shadows featurette gives us a little vampire history

- April 27th, 2012

The Avengers might hog most of the Internet chatter over the next week, but Warner Bros. is making sure film fans don’t forget their big summer release, Dark Shadows, due out on May 11.

A new featurette goes great lengths to show that the movie is an important piece in the Depp-Burton canon (they’ve done eight films in case you’re not keeping count).

“I’d always been sort of attracted to horror films and things like that, even as a very young kid,” Depp explains. “I said, ‘Tim, we should do a vampire movie together.’ ”

With The Black Keys providing some background noise, the featurette covers the rich history of vampires on the big screen and Burton serves notice (sort of) to those (me included) who might have thought that Dark Shadows was going strictly for the funny bone.

“Vampires, witches, ghosts… it’s something that remains in our popular culture because it’s strangely part of our everyday lives,” Burton says.

Check out the clip below. Does this make you excited for Dark Shadows? Let us know below.

Guy Pearce joins Iron Man 3

- April 20th, 2012

The Avengers hasn’t even hit screens yet and the third instalment of Iron Man is about to go before cameras next month.

After talk surfaced that Ben Kingsley was going to be the baddie this time out, Variety is reporting that Guy Pearce will be playing geneticist Aldrich Killian – Robert Downey’s latest nemesis.

According to Marvel’s site, Killian helped create the “extremis virus.”

The film, written and directed by Lethal Weapon scribe Shane Black, will be loosely based on Warren Ellis’ Extremis story arc from the Iron Man comics, which also was an influence for the first Iron Man picture.

I’ve always been a little anti-Iron Man on the comics front (too square, not enough darkness), but I am intrigued to see Black’s celluloid take on the character.

Ditto Guy Pearce. I remember loving him in L.A. Confidential and Memento and then wondering what happened to him until he surfaced again in an all-too-brief spot in The Hurt Locker.

He’s been getting tons of press for his portrayal of Peter Weyland in Ridley Scott’s upcoming Alien prequel Prometheus. I know, I know, it’s supposed to be set in its own “universe.” But watch the clip below or this one and tell me it’s not a gonna be an Alien movie.

In the meantime, while we breathlessly wait for the next Iron Man flick, here is the latest trailer for The Avengers.

Lady in Red: Not so much for Nikki Yanofsky

- April 20th, 2012

Nikki Yanofksy knows she became the “I Believe” girl two years ago.
That’s when the 18 year old jazz-pop singer from Montreal was chosen to sing the CTV broadcast theme, I Believe, during the Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
She also sang the national anthem during the opening ceremony.
Yanofsky, who makes her Massey Hall headlining debut on April 21 in Toronto before a May to August strech of Canadian arena dates opening for Il Divo, said it got so bad she avoided the colour red at one point.
“In the height of it I would walk anywhere and people were like, ‘Oh, that’s the I Believe girl!’’ Yanofsky told QMI Agency while in Toronto this week.
“Whenever I’d wear like a red top or anything red, I would get more recognized because I guess I wore red at the Olympics and it kind of triggers that memory for people. I had a red winter jacket and anywhere I’d go in Vancouver I’d get recognized so I switched my jacket.”
Still, the major upside was that I Believe got people to listen to her 2010 studio album, Nikki, with a followup album currently in the works.
“I Believe really helped with that because it’s a very big, pop anthemic kind of sound. So people heard that and then they went and looked me up and I got lots of mail from younger people saying, ‘You know, I had no idea even what jazz really was and I heard your song I Believe and then I listened to your other things and it’s so cool.’”

Speed demon shoots video travelling at 299 km/h

- April 19th, 2012

UPDATE: B.C. police have seized ‘Joe Blow’s’ bike. Officers tracked the IP address linked to the person who posted the video, and believe the motorcyclist shot the clip on April 5 or 6. Read the full story here.

———

A YouTube video showing a motorcyclist hitting 299 km/hour on a highway in Victoria, B.C., is making waves online and has ignited a firestorm of controversy.

The video has been viewed over 200,000 times and B.C. police say they are close to catching someone. Meanwhile, the brazen motorcyclist has Canadians in an uproar.

“It makes me sick that this guy thinks he has the right to ignore the law and to make decisions that endanger the lives of his fellow citizens,” said one commentator.

“Make sure you’re wearing the camera when the cops arrest you, revoke your licence and then slap you with a hefty fine. Better yet, throw you in prison on a list of charges. Now THAT would be awesome,” writes another.

But when it comes to catching the ‘speed demon,’ cops might be talking a big game (they say they are narrowing in on the motorcyclist’s IP address), considering the culprit published the video April 8 under the moniker Joe Blow and removed their licence plate.

In a creepy turn of events, some are encouraging Joe to film a sequel.

“I love the way everyone says they are going to catch you,” one supporter says. “I’d like to know how when you took your license plate off and I know of 6 or 7 blue R6′s just in my area. good luck to the cops and cant wait for the next vid.”

In the meantime, if you’re on the roads in B.C., you might want to watch yourself.

Patrick Watson: Makes grown men cry in concert

- April 16th, 2012

Apparently, Montrealer Patrick Watson’s recent SXSW show in Austin, in support of his band’s fourth album, Adventures in Your Own Backyard, in stores April 17, reduced the National Public Radio male reviewer to tears.
“That’s what he wrote, I didn’t see him, I’m not an eyewitness!” joked Watson to QMI Agency before adding more seriously: “Like NPR’s the radio station I listen to. I love it. I was definitely flattered.  At the same time, when I hear that, I don’t think I brought someone to tears. I think music brought someone to tears. And music is a much bigger thing than I am, you know? My dad always said, ‘Musicians are like satellites, and they’re in the right place at the right time and they get music from space.’ I’ve always kept that analogy. Music’s kind of like a language and you’re having a conversation with the piano and the piano will tell you the story and you just write it down.’ It really feels like that to me if I’m being really honest. As I travel, little ideas pop in my pocket and I keep them there until that day where I sit at the piano and have a conversation. It’s weird. I’m a pretty hyper guy I guess, so I get to the piano, I’m pretty happy for something to calm me down.”
Still, he’s encouraged by the American response so far.
“I think our audiences will build in the states because of this record,” said Watson. “I just feel like it’s the right time.”
