Wait for Office of Religious Freedom explained

- May 25th, 2012

So that’s what’s taking the much-ballyhooed Office of Religious Freedom so long to get off the ground! It’s bureaucracy.

Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird made the following statement about the office in a speech to the Religious Liberty Dinner in Washington DC on Thursday.

As anyone who has ever worked in, or with, government can appreciate, an endeavor like this takes some doing.

Nothing is easy.

And you really only get one chance to get it right.

We know that freedom of religion does not mean freedom from religion.

So, we in Canada have consulted widely and listened intently.

We are taking the time to get it right the first time, and to set it up for success.

We will be making more announcements to that end in due course.

What most excites me about this new office is how it might help our diplomats around the world support religious freedom.

So we know the project is still in the works, even though all the details haven’t been hammered out.

Who supports Omar Khadr’s return?

- May 25th, 2012

Abacus Data has the numbers:

OTTAWA – The Tories will be at odds with the majority of Canadians – and almost 70% of their supporters – when they eventually allow convicted terrorist Omar Khadr back into Canada, a new poll shows.

The Abacus Data survey into public opinion on Khadr, who pleaded guilty in 2010 to war crimes committed in Afghanistan when he was 15 years old, suggests 53% of Canadians view him as a security threat and shouldn’t be allowed back into the country.
