NBC reports that the husband of South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, a Tea Party favourite and possible Republican vice-presidential nominee, is deploying to Afghanistan as a member of the National Guard. Haley’s brother also fought in Desert Storm. And those with long memories by modern standards will recall that in the 2008 election, three of the four top-of-the-ticket candidates had children the military (Joe Biden, John McCain and Sarah Palin all had sons serving in Iraq during the election) while Barack Obama’s kids were too young.
Can anyone imagine an election in Canada where several major party leaders had kids in uniform, or a spouse on active service?
