And another thing re women in combat. In announcing the opening of combat positions to women outgoing U.S. Defence Secretary Leon Panetta said it is “the responsibility of every citizen to protect the nation.” So if America should find itself in a protracted conflict on sufficient scale to require a return to compulsory military service, will women be drafted just like men?

I don’t think the logic is drafty at all. And it’s hard to see, given the 14th Amendment, how men could be subject to conscription and women not.
Anyway, the U.S. can’t afford the force structure it has. If it ever needs conscription again…
