Statement from Public Safety Minister Vic Toews on Omar Khadr’s repatriation

- September 29th, 2012

Here’s the statement, made in Winnipeg this morning, by Public Safety Minister Vic Toews on Omar Khadr’s repatriation.

Good morning. I will be making a short statement.

Early this morning, convicted terrorist Omar Khadr was transferred to Canadian authorities at CFB Trenton.

This was done pursuant to a decision I made earlier this week.

He arrived at 07:40 ET aboard a U.S. Government aircraft travelling from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

He has been transferred from CFB Trenton to Millhaven maximum security prison at Bath, Ontario.

Omar Khadr is a known supporter of the Al-Qaeda terrorist network and a convicted terrorist.

He pleaded guilty to the murder of Sergeant First Class Christopher Speer, an American Army medic, who was mortally wounded in a firefight in Afghanistan on July 27, 2002 and died on August 6, 2002.

Omar Khadr also pleaded guilty to:

·   Providing material support for terrorism;

·   Attempted murder in violation of the law of war;

·   Conspiracy and spying

Omar Khadr was born in Canada and is a Canadian citizen. As a Canadian citizen, he has a right to enter Canada after the completion of his sentence.

This transfer occurs following a process initiated by the United States Government and determined in accordance with Canadian law.

The remainder of his prison sentence will be administered by the Correctional Service of Canada.

I am satisfied the Correctional Service of Canada can administer Omar Khadr’s sentence in a manner which recognizes the serious nature of the crimes that he has committed and ensure the safety of Canadians is protected during incarceration.

Any decisions related to his future will be determined by the independent Parole Board of Canada in accordance with Canadian law.

Thank you.

    Why did they bring this murderer back to Canada so soon? He isn’t wanted here. When this piece of work and his family denounce our way of life and culture they should go back to we’re they came from and they practice their fanatical ways as they believe the works should be . They are parasites to our welfare system and I doubt if they contribute anything to the Canadian system or community other than their terrorist culture or their third world backwards fanatical way of thinking.
    They are taking up space from people from third world countries that truly want to be good Canadians and contribute to our society.

    I guarantee you that the opposition parties are thrilled beyond belief since it was they who chanted daily in the HOC for the return of Khadr.

    Even CBC joined in the chorus all pointing fingers at the government to do so.
    Besides, Khadr is a Canadian and sooner or later he was going to come back.

    You should have seen that performance in the HOC; they knew that the government of the day (cpc) had no choice but to do their will because they, opposition held the majority and when the majority speaks you follow even though it went against the CPC wishes.
