Brian Topp raises most money for NDP leadership campaign

Brian Topp is on top of fundraising in the NDP leadership race.

The former party president and first candidate to enter the race to replace the late Jack Layton raised $156,597 between September and December, according to financial figures released by the NDP.

Montreal MP Thomas Mulcair came in second with $145,863. Toronto MP Peggy Nash collected $108,223.

They were followed by Ottawa MP Paul Dewar ($93,931), B.C. MP Nathan Cullen ($86,109), Nova Scotia businessman Martin Singh ($49,077), Quebec MP Romeo Saganash ($17,552) and Manitoba MP Niki Ashton ($10,215).

The NDP set a $500,000 spending cap for each candidate.

The party will elect its next leader at a Toronto convention on March 24.

In the NDP’s 2003 race, Layton raised the most money and won the party’s top job.
