Theresa Spence with Justin Trudeau

Liberal leadership contender Justin Trudeau paid a visit to Chief Theresa Spence at her Victoria Island teepee on Boxing Day. The meeting, which lasted about 45 minutes, occurred at the request of Trudeau, who expressed the desire to come and listen, and express solidarity with the Attawapiskat leader who’s been on a hunger strike since December 11.

  1. David Dymond says:

Doesn’t look like she lost much weight yet, maybe the hunger strike is like her position on the reserve………..all for the press and publicity.

  2. G. A. Strick says:

Have all these protesters been given holiday time off by their employers? Or are we taxpayers funding all these days for these thousands to tramp around demanding this and demanding that!!. Why don’t the leaders of this bunch explain truthfully what living in a democracy is really about and the process for solving problems. As for Trudeau…what a sorry excuse for a politician, he has no credentials except a suspect lineage and a talent for spouting nonsense.

  3. Dave Hill says:

Why ask who pays a striker to strike? Did his same question get posted when teachers walked off the job this month or do you ask only because she wears a feather?
If you take the time to look at the issues behind this action you will see that they impact us all, not just the brave woman in the tent. Not knowing what she is seeking, or commenting on her weight, shows a level of ignorance that should not be tolerated in this day and age.

  4. bob says:

right on Dave H Just goes to show the mentality of the right wing sun media worshippers

  5. Laura says:

I’m not a Sun Media worshipper, but I think Dave H’s comment that Spence is not appearing to lose weight is valid. I fast now and then for health reasons and know that she is in no danger whatsoever of starving if she drinks fish broth. It actually would be easier for her to stay on the fast if she quit the fish broth. Her stomach would shut down and she would cease to be hungry. She would lose weight very quickly and easily. If she were as skinny as Jack Layton, Harper would come calling soon enough.

  6. Ron says:

…It will be a positive step in forging a new relationship between aboriginal peoples and other Canadians, a relationship based on the knowledge of our shared history, a respect for each other and a desire to move forward together with a renewed understanding that strong families, strong communities and vibrant cultures and traditions will contribute to a stronger Canada for all of us. ~ PM Stephen Harper….excerpt form apology speech…. the Indians would say “he speak with forked tongue”….there is a lot of untold history out there also….do the research, look it up, it’s right there in front of you…. this story is much bigger. Open your mind, put aside those propagated stereotypical nonsensical issues regarding natives and see past the smoke screens put in place by governments of past and new.

  7. Ian Coleman says:

Chief Spence is on a liquid diet, consuming nutrients, including amino acids. This is all just a big fake-out, and there is no way the Prime Minster is going to fall for it. How it will end is that Chief Spence will just get tired of the whole thing and end the so-called hunger strike, and the media will mark it with a short story and pretend the whole thing never happened.
