No military charges for video mocking bin Laden

- February 7th, 2013

Military police will not lay charges over a video that showed a Canadian Forces member mocking terrorist Osama bin Laden while using a phoney Arab accent and wearing a turban and brown makeup.

Air Force Lt.-Gen. Yvan Blondin immediately apologized and asked for an investigation last November after the CBC, which described the video as “racially charged,” reported on the tape that was made for a mess dinner in 2010.

Blondin said in a statement that the investigation ended Wednesday and “there is no evidence of any military discipline or criminal offences associated with the content of this video or those individuals involved in making it.”

Still, he said making the video “showed poor judgment” and doesn’t meet the standards expected of Canadian Forces members.

Blondin has banned any repeat showings of the video and ordered the destruction of any known copies.
