Speaking of guns…

- January 11th, 2013

With so much discussion of guns and possible gun control in the United States it’s important to understand what the 2nd Amendment to their constitution means and why it exists. To that end, consider today’s offering from The Patriot Post “Founder’s Quote Daily”:

”I ask, Sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people. To disarm the people is the best and most effectual way to enslave them.” – George Mason, Speech at the Virginia Ratifying Convention, 1788

I’m not saying you have to agree with it. But I am saying that if you want to follow the debate, and especially if you want to comment usefully on it, you need to understand what both sides are saying and why.

Truer words are rarely spoken. Going far past the tenets of self-defence the Western world has engaged in global wars killing millions in order to save and free billions from tyranny, oppression and death. Although terrible deeds are carried out with guns, guns have saved the lives and prevented the deaths of far more persons than they take, in peacetime and sometimes in war. Democracy and freedom can only be defended in our current historical period by guns and the ability of a responsible, free, caring and law abiding citizenry that chooses of each persons own volition to take up the responsibility of gun ownership.

the day of the gun is long over – possession of side arms and automatic weapons should be prohibited and treated much like treason was in the old days

it is well know single shot rifles produce more game, use less ammunition and are safer for target practice

if is just a matter of putting the country first

  3. Peter Stafford says:

When guns are outlawed only outlaws will have guns

Although this is a very simplistic statement When you think about it,it does have the ring of truth in it.
The problems involving firearms are not so simply solved.
Cocaine Marih.. and Heroin are Illegal kill way more people than guns and destroy countless lives, but there seems to be lots of it around.

Lots of drivers on the road with suspended licenses.
Lots of shattered lives for various reasons involving broken laws.
Lets not forget prohibition, one of the big ones.
Pile of people got rich breaking that law.
Having said all that I dont think anyone needs a rifle with a 20 shot clip in it at the present time in history.
Im not aware of what kind of a screening process US Gun owners go thru but maybe that should be looked at also.

The epic political philosophers Americans call their “Founding Fathers” understood that ideal government needs to be within the consent of the governed and “consent” means nothing unless it can be effectively revoked. Elections help with that, but are not enough. Plenty of tyrannical countries hold elections.

The other deep reason for gun ownership is self-defence. If it is a “right”, then we are entitled to the means to exercise it. I believe this is why Canadians have never been allowed to talk about, or even research, the use of firearms in defence of self, family and property.

    It is time.
