Councillor Doug Ford officially launched his Rexdale Raiders basketball team Tuesday night.
Sun photographer Ernest Doroszuk was at the gym at 900 Queen’s Plate Dr. to take in the action (scroll down for more pictures of Coach Ford on the court).
Back in May when Ford first started up the team (story here), he laughed about how his brother, Mayor Rob Ford, would “freak” when he found out the basketball team was using the name of Rob’s summer football team.
The supervised basketball program involves kids and teens from ages 6 to 20 and runs once a week for three hours. According to a press release from Ford’s office, around 50 to 60 youth take part in the program.
On Tuesday, Ford handed out jerseys to the kids (he paid for the uniforms out of his own pocket).
“As the Councillor for Ward 2 Etobicoke North, I am committed to the health and well being of the youth in my ward,” Ford said in the press release.
“When I was made aware of the lack of sporting facilities available to the youth in Queen’s Plate, I decided to take action.
“I am very pleased to have the opportunity to mentor and coach such a fantastic and deserving group of kids.”
