One man was shot dead Saturday inside the Eaton Centre food court.

Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam, whose ward includes the Eaton Centre, released this statement Sunday:

Kristyn Wong-Tam’s Statement to Torontonians about the recent shootings

June 3, 2012.

I am extending my sincere sympathies to those who were directly affected by the shooting in the Eaton Centre.

I am particularly saddened by the death of one young man and the serious injuries caused to seven others, who have been and continue to be treated in our hospitals.

Thank you to the Toronto Police and all first responders to this tragic incident.  Your jobs are important and you serve our city with steadfast devotion for which I am grateful.  I know that the officers will do all that they can to investigate this crime and to bring the shooter to justice.

This reckless act of violence in our beloved city will not be tolerated. Toronto is a safe city and our residents and business owners shall not be intimidated by these senseless actions.

Torontonians will not run from this tragedy.

We shall strengthen our resolve and re-double our efforts to rid our city of gun violence. We will work with all Torontonians to bring peace and security back into our communities.

I remain in your service,

Kristyn Wong-Tam

City Councillor, Ward 27
