Jets and Habs meet for final time

- February 5th, 2012

MONTREAL — It’s the fourth and final meeting for the Winnipeg Jets and Montreal Canadiens and both clubs are desperate for a victory on Sunday afternoon at Bell Centre.

The Jets are coming off a 2-1 loss to the Florida Panthers, while the Canadiens were booed off the ice on Saturday afternoon after losing 3-0 to the Washington Capitals and slipped to the Eastern Conference basement with a record of 19-24-9.

The interesting thing about the season series to date is that all three games have been decided by four goals — a 5-1 win for the Habs in the Jets opener on Oct. 9, a 4-0 shutout for the Jets on Dec. 22 and a 7-3 triumph for the Canadiens on Jan. 4.

That’s what you call a statistical oddity.

“It’s a little different,” said Jets defenceman Zach Bogosian.

Jets head coach Claude Noel wasn’t putting a lot of stock in the numbers game.

“Yeah, it’s been strange,” said Noel. “The last time we were in here, we were trailing 4-3 going into the third and they scored a couple of quick goals and that was pretty much the way it went. I don’t know about the four-goal differentials. We haven’t seen four goals or three goals for a long time. For us, we’re just concerned with the way we’re going to play. We have to continue playing the same way we’ve played these last three or four games.

“I don’t concern myself with the past scores. They were a while ago and we’ve been playing better defensively.”

The goaltending match-up features Ondrej Pavelec and Carey Price.

The Jets have been struggling to score goals and Noel admitted he was considering inserting winger Spencer Machacek to the lineup on Sunday.

As usual, it will be a game-time decision and based on his comments, the scratch would likely be one of Eric Fehr Nik Antropov or Kyle Wellwood.
