Jets face Habs on Super Bowl Sunday

- February 2nd, 2014

MONTREAL — Remember that reward Paul Maurice mentioned that was in store for goalie Al Montoya?

Well, it’s time for Montoya to collect as the Winnipeg Jets backup goalie will get the call between the pipes against the Montreal Canadiens here at Bell Centre on Sunday afternoon.

Because of the comments that Maurice made to the media supporting Ondrej Pavelec on Saturday, I figured that No. 1 would be playing again but giving Montoya this game makes sense on a lot of levels.

First and foremost, the Habs have owned the Jets historically, so why not give Montoya a shot?

Montoya helped the Jets weather the storm against the Chicago Blackhawks last Sunday and kept them in the game long enough for them to rally in the third period for a 3-1 victory.

The Canadiens aren’t the Blackhawks, but they are coming off a 2-1 overtime loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday, so they’ll be hungry.

Carey Price is back in net for the Habs after playing against the Lightning on Saturday.

Montoya will make his 14th start and 17th appearance of the season, which leaves him right on track for the 20-plus starts I predicted for him this season.

The Jets didn’t play that well in front of Montoya against the Blackhawks, so I’m curious to see if they play a tighter defensive game in this one.

The Canadiens have a lot of speed as well, so this should be a fast-paced game. The Jets are going to have to get their feet moving right out of the gate and must set the physical tone.

Montreal is without second-year forward Alex Galchenyuk and that’s a huge loss for them.

Based on the pre-game warm-up, there won’t be any lineup changes for the Jets, which means that left-winger Eric Tangradi will play his second game under Maurice.

Habs centre Michael Bournival sat out Saturday’s game with the flu and is an actual game-time decision.
