Jets set to face Oilers, trim five more from roster

EDMONTON — Good afternoon from the City of Champions.

The Winnipeg Jets are set to face the Edmonton Oilers on Monday night at Rexall Place in what will be their sixth of eight pre-season tilts.

Arrived in the City of Champions from Minny on Sunday night so wasn’t around for the morning skate at MTS Centre, but based on what my colleagues back home are reporting, it looks like the Jets are dressing an interesting lineup in this one.

Interesting in that it includes several players suiting up for their first pre-season game (due to injury) in forwards Adam Lowry, Chris Thorburn and Andrew Gordon and several others on the bubble, if you will, including Eric O’Dell (coming off a performance that saw him score a goal and add an assist in his best of three games) and Patrice Cormier (who had a goal and was very involved in Saturday’s 4-3 shootout loss to the Minnesota Wild).

On defence, the jockeying for position continues for Jacob Trouba, Zach Redmond and Adam Pardy while Grant Clitsome will be paired with Zach Bogosian on what could be a shutdown pairing for the Jets if Noel keeps Dustin Byfuglien and Toby Enstrom together.

Prior to the game, the Jets announced they’d assigned five more players to the St. John’s IceCaps of the American Hockey League:

G Michael Hutchinson
D Julian Melchiori
D Ben Chiarot
F Carl Klingberg
F Jerome Samson (who requires waivers)

The Jets are down to 32 and still must get down to 23 a couple days before opening the season against the Oilers at Rexall Place on Oct. 1.

One of those 32 will be the third goalie, but that means nine players will either be re-assigned or possibly waived or traded or placed on injured reserve, leaving tonight’s game as possibly the final chance to impress (at least for some).

Noel told reporters in Winnipeg that Eddie Pasquale will start in goal and the plan is for him to play the entire game.

Below are the Jets’ projected lines and D pairs for tonight’s game against the Oilers, who were dealt some more bad news this morning when they announced C Sam Gagner requires surgery and will be out indefinitely with a broken jaw sustained Saturday after taking a stick in the face from Vancouver Canucks RW Zack Kassian.

The Oilers also picked up heavyweight LW Steve MacIntyre off waivers on Monday to address their need for further toughness.

Enjoy the game. Let me know after in the comments section: who played well and who needs to do more?
