Remember the good old days when the Liberals always had a leader-in-waiting.
John Turner was hanging around just in case Pierre Trudeau went for a walk in a blizzard and came back with a different answer.
Paul Martin waited patiently, OK not that patiently, while Jean Chretien ran the Liberals and the government with an iron first.
Well ironically it was Martin that signalled a downward spiral for the Liberals when it comes to leadership.
Since Martin imploded we have had Stephan Dion and then the bloodless coup that led to Michael Ignattief .
In comes Bob Rae and the search for a permanent leader began.
So the Liberals are clearly in a period of transition (the Toronto Maple Leafs call times like this rebuilding).
Remember when the Liberals had all these young upstarts — anyone of which could have become leader some day. They included Don Boudria, Sheila Copps, Brian Tobin, Sheila Copps and John Nunziata.
So who are the next generation of Liberal leaders. Actually, it’s more like who is this generation of Liberal leaders.
Well given the faux pas of the last couple of days, stroke Justin Trudeau off the list. The romantic among the Liberal party would’ve loved to have had been able to truck out a second generation of charismatic, forward thinkers but no such luck.
Not a lot of style, even less substance.
