Exercise spotlight: Smith-machine pushups

- March 14th, 2010

If regular pushups are just too difficult, then give Smith-machine pushups a go. Justin Ng, a 25-year-old personal trainer and indoor spin cycle instructor, demonstrates the effective chest exercise, which also works the shoulders and triceps.

And if you don’t have access to a Smith machine, a kitchen counter will do.

Justin’s instructions:

• Start off with your feet together and chest across the bar, making an L-shape from your shoulders to your hands.

• Push. As you push, your shoulders are squeezed together.

• Inhale coming down. Exhale as you push.

If that’s too easy, then lower the bar and repeat the process with your feet slightly apart, Justin advises.
