How to eat fast food and avoid all that sugar

You can’t have your cake and eat it, too.

Well, not the WHOLE cake. There’s just too much darn sugar. And sugar’s the enemy. (Of course, the occasional small piece of cake won’t hurt ya.)

But you CAN have your burger and eat it, too (every once in awhile, crocodile).

Weight-loss guru Doug Varrieur says so.

Varrieur, author of Fat To Skinny, offers the following step-by-step guide to eating fast food when that craving just won’t go away – while keeping the sugar content low (he randomly chooses Burger King as an example):

• Tell the guy behind the counter you don’t want any ketchup in the Whopper because that’s where the sugar is.

• Get yourself a diet soda or glass of water with lemon.

• Buy yourself a side salad if you wish.

• Take your order and go sit down.

• Take the top roll off the burger. The bun, throw it away.

• Take your thumbs, stick them underneath those hamburger patties, and pull them off the bottom roll.

• If you got a side salad, break up all that meat on top of your salad. Put some ranch dressing on there. Oh, ranch dressing? That’s one of those creamy dressings full of fat. Guess what? There’s no sugar in there. It’s very low in sugar. It’s terrific.

• Eat your meat, cheese and vegetables. You’ve just eaten a zero-sugar lunch.

“Sugar is as addictive as heroin,” adds Varrieur. “They don’t call it feel-good food for nothing – because it really does make you feel good and that’s the problem with sugar.”

(NOTE: Of course, nobody is suggesting you eat like this every day!)

Hi there,

I loved the article Stamping out the sweet tooth…it was very inspirational!

Here’s my story:

I have a “bad” knee and back that flared up in December.  As a result, I haven’t been able to walk or do much of anything.  I’ve gained 25 lbs and just feel terrible (physically and mentally).  I’ve been doing physiotherapy and now I’m seeing a chiropractor.  My pain is somewhat better and I’ve had some improvement in function.  However, I have to deal with the weight issue.  I’m feeling overwhelmed and I don’t know where to start.  I have to loose weight to further help with my knee/back, not to mention my overall health and spirits.  I’m concerned that if  I don’t stop this cycle I’ll gain even more weight and other health problems will develop.  I really identified with Doug as I have a sweet tooth too!!! (my snacking has gotten out of control).  As I was reading the article I kept thinking….if he can do it so can I.  Help!

HELLO:   I AM WRITING TO YOU FTER READING THE ARTICLE IN PETERBOROUGH’S “THE PETERBOROUGH EXAMINER”.

MY NAME IS BARB AND I AM A “YOUNG” 66.

I WOULD LIKE TO WIN AN AUTOGRAPHED COPY OF “FAT TO SKINNY” BECAUSE I WOULD LIKE TO SHARE IT WITH MY 69 YEAR OLD SISTER, ESTHER, WHO  IS QUITE OVERWEIGHT.   SHE HAS BEEN TO A HYPNOTIST A FEW WEEKS AGO AND IS REALLY TRYING TO LOSE WEIGHT, HOWEVER, SHE HAS NOT LOST A POUND.   I TELL HER THAT AT LEAST SHE HASN’T GAINED!

I READ THAT DOUG DID NOT EXERCISE UNTIL HE LOST 110 POUNDS (INFORMATION SHE NEEDS TO READ IN HIS BOOK!).    ESTHER HAS BEEN EXERCISING A HALF HOUR EACH DAY, WHICH MIGHT BE PART OF WHY SHE IS NOT LOSING.

AS MY HUSBAND IS DECEASED AND ESTHER IS MY ONLY SIBLING, I WANT TO KEEP HER AROUND FOR AS LONG AS I AM !!!!!     EVEN THOUGH SHE IS MARRIED WITH TWO CHILDREN AND FOUR GRANDCHILDREN, WE DO A LOT OF THINGS TOGETHER,  YARD SALEING, PADDLE BOATING AT THE COTTAGE, TALKING ON THE PHONE ABOUT “FARMVILLE” WHICH IS A GAME ON FACEBOOK, SHOPPING etc.   Soooo, AS YOU CAN SEE, I REALLY DO NEED HER AROUND FOR QUITE SOME TIME.

OH, AND BY THE WAY, WHEN I SAID I WOULD SHARE THE BOOK WITH HER, I REALLY MEANT IT BECAUSE, EVEN THOUGH I DON’T WANT TO ADMIT IT, I WOULD BENEFIT FROM IT ALSO !!

My name is Kate, I am 55 years of age.

I need to lose weight because I am going to venture on to a new beginning in my life and I would like to do it lighter than I am.  I am a mother of 5 and a wife of 30 years.  The marriage is going to be dissolving when we sell our house this summer.  I have been in a depressed state of mind for quite a while now, spending days in bed setting the alarm so that I would be up and awake when the kids came home from school.  I would eat chocolate all the time while lying in bed.  I would hide it all over the house so the kids wouldn’t eat it.  I used to pride myself on the fact that I ate all this sugar but was not gaining weight.  What a laugh.  I have ballooned up to 235 pounds on a 5’3″ frame.  I hide junk food all over my bedroom and eat it at night when only I can see.  Deluding myself that I am not doing myself any harm.  I have been diagonised with fybromyalgia, type 2 diabetis and my knees are making clicking sound when I walk.  My back is killing me and I find it hard to do anything physical at all.  I work in retail and do 9 hour shifts on my feet.  On days off, I recouperate from the long shifts.  I have 3 flights of stairs in the house and I find it hard to tackle one.

I need to kick this sugar habit.  It is killing me.  I would like to be around to enjoy the new beginning in my life and to see my grandchildren and children grow up and old with me.  Please consider me for the book as I think it would save my life!

Good Morning,

My name is Brenda (53), and I read your article in the Peterborough Examiner on a author who helped himself over weight and health issues.  I looked up his book on the web and there is hope for me.

I have health issues also,  I am a type 2 diabetic and have recently found out I have two tumors in my neck. I am working with a great doctor at Princess Margaret Hospital.  I need to lose some  weight.  I am 5’1″ and way about 195 lbs.

For years I have tried different diets and fads and I loss a few pounds but nothing substantial.  I have been married for 28 years to a great man.  We have two grown children.  We have three grandchildren.  So I have been blessed in many ways.

To be successful in becoming healthy, I know I have to lose this weight and I will.  Thanks for listening.

Hi Cary,

My name is Melody, I’m 21 years old, and I recently read about Doug Varrieur’s “Fat to Skinny” in the Peterborough Examiner.

And here’s why I need to lose weight, in 399 words:

I grew up in a home where health was not a priority, and poor nutritional choices were made every day.  As a kid, I ate cookies, ice cream, and candy because that was the food available and because no one ever explained to me the consequences of eating bad food or the benefits of eating healthy.  As a teenager, my prom dress was made for me because it was so difficult to find a dress for a 203-pound 18-year-old.  Being a heavyset young person makes it difficult to find clothes that fit and are flattering and trendy, and losing weight would help make this endeavour easier.

Losing weight would also give me a boost of confidence.  Spending time with thinner friends sometimes makes me self-conscious, and trips to the beach or pool often make me cringe about putting my bathing suit on, even though I love to swim.  One day, I would love to be able to confidently wear a bikini, but I have some weight-loss hurdles to conquer before that day comes.

I am a classical voice major at the University of Toronto, and pursuing voice studies at university has helped open my eyes to how important it is to be healthy.  A healthy person helps make a healthy singer, and being in good physical shape is a key element to being a good performer, as well.  Having strong core muscles and a lean body helps a singer’s posture, breathing, and endurance, and it is important to me to improve these areas of my singing by losing weight.

Right before I started at U of T, I began to date my present boyfriend, who encouraged me to work out at the gym with him.  Then I learned that U of T’s tuition fees include a membership to multiple gym facilities, and I was persuaded to make some healthy lifestyle changes.  For more than a year now I have been very committed to this healthier lifestyle and have lost 40 pounds, which I am very happy about.  Nonetheless, I have hit a slump recently and have not lost any weight for the past few months, and I’m not sure why.  I’m hoping that Varrieur’s “Fat to Skinny” will be able to provide me with the tools I need to get over the slump, feel better about myself, become a healthier person and singer, and one day wear a bikini!

Try, Try Again.

I’ve been on many diets trying to keep my weight down. My parents had type 2 Diabetes and Obesity. Most of their 10 children had it too.

My weight has been up and down over the years. I’m in my 75th year and still trying!

Reading about Doug Varrieur’s story is an incentive to try again. I’m not on medication and I try to swim every day for exercise. My biggest problem is trying to control my weight. I’m 5′ 7″ and at this time 250+ lbs. Food seems to control me. I’d like it to be the other way around.

Like Doug Varrieur I look in the mirror and say “Oh how I wish I were slim.”

I’m sure most people don’t want to be fat. The commercial world makes a fortune on books alone on how fat people can become skinny.

I’d like to win a copy of Doug Varrieur’s book to help me to lose  weight and be healthy
