World’s Fittest Man on Earth defends title

Yours truly, flanked by two of the 'Fittest Men on Earth' — two-time Reebok CrossFit Games champ Rich Froning Jr. (left) and the 2010 winner Graham Holmberg — this past February in Toronto.

Congrats to Rich Froning Jr., who won the 2012 Reebok CrossFit Games this past weekend to retain the trademarked title of the World’s Fittest Man on Earth.

That’s the moniker he first earned at the 2011 CrossFit Games.

And indeed, Rich gets richer. This year’s victory gives him another $250,000.

I featured Froning Jr. in March in my Keeping Fit column.

As part of the feature, I travelled to Toronto the previous month and had the good fortune to work out with Froning Jr. and fellow Reebok-sponsored athlete Graham Holmberg. Holmberg, of course, is the 2010 Reebok CrossFit Games champion. He finished 10th this year.

A tip of the hat to two incredible athletes and fitness role models.

Lord of the rings? Not quite. Froning Jr. (left) and Holmberg put me through my paces.

In case you missed it, here are the links to my national Keeping Fit columns that comprised a four-part series on the burgeoning sport/workout brand of CrossFit:

Rich Froning Jr. — Monday, March 5, 2012

Angie Pye — Monday, March 12, 2012

Alicia Connors — Friday, March 30, 2012

Graham Holmberg — Monday, April 9, 2012

And here are some photos I took while participating in a one-of-a-kind fitness stunt — highlighted by a CrossFit flash mob — earlier this year at Yonge and Dundas Square in Toronto as part of Reebok’s global CrossFit campaign …

Reebok's CrossFit billboard campaign at the corner of Dundas and Yonge streets in downtown Toronto.

What's in the red Reebok-CrossFit box (a 15,000-pound shipping container) suspended 30 feet above Yonge-Dundas Square?

reebokbeforeflashmob

All is relatively quiet at the popular downtown landmark just prior to the arrival of the flash mobsters.

One unsuspecting passerby stops for a smoke break on a large tire doubling for a piece of CrossFit workout equipment. Um, sir, that's not quite what event organizers have in mind!

Amid a haze of smoke, an industrial crane dramatically lowers the 'box' to the concrete.

And here comes the orange-clad flash mob!

These energetic CrossFit enthusiasts waste no time getting to work.

Nice shoes.

The impressive CrossFit flash mob is 200 strong.

reebokkid

Even some young kids take part in the fun.

crossfit

Coolest. Flash mob. Ever.

The flash mobsters are from some of the nearly 200 CrossFit gyms across Canada.

The red Reebok-CrossFit box comes in handy.

It is quite a spectacle.

CrossFitBox

OK, so what is in the red Reebok-CrossFit box, anyway?

CrossFitEquipment

CrossFit equipment, of course.
