Live from the NFL scouting combine: Thursday

INDIANAPOLIS — I’ll update here with news and quotes as it happens. Crazy packed day, with 27 NFL head coach and GMs holding 15-minute news conferences — plus a slew of offensive linemen, tight ends and kickers.

Keep checking back for updates…

Philbin kicks it off

Embattled Miami Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin opened the day with an opening statement, then got grilled about the Incognito/Martin scandal.

“We’re going to have a better workplace, I promise you that,” Philbin said (my photo, above). “I’m going to make sure that happens.”

Philbin confirmed that longtime team trainer Kevin O’Neill was here in Indianapolis when he was fired on Wednesday.

More later.

First quote of the day

Pittsburgh Steelers GM Kevin Colbert, on potential radical moves: “When you’re 8-8, nothing is radical.”

Colbert then said this about what he looks for in grading quarterbacks in particular, but all players in general: “I like to watch how they perform in big moments, in challenging moments.”

The non-Browns non-Lions head coach

COMBINEKen Whisenhunt, new head coach of the Tennessee Titans, was asked far more questions about the head coach jobs he didn’t get in his 15-minute news conference. Mostly the Cleveland Browns job.

Time and again, he was asked about his interview with then Browns president Joe Banner and then Browns GM Mike Lombardi.

Whisenhunt did not outright deny what MMQB’s Peter King reported, that Whisenhunt bristled when Banner attempted to stick in his two cents about the staff Whisenhunt would hire.

Whisenhunt also was asked about his interview with the Detroit Lions.

As for the job he ultimately got, with the Titans, Whisenhunt was non-committal about the return of star running back Chris Johnson, as was GM Ruston Webster a few minutes later.

Perennially injured Jake Locker is expected to be healthy for OTAs, Whisenhunt said.
