Texans-Ravens, countdown to kickoff

Texans

HOUSTON, Texas — News, notes, observations a couple hours before the Houston Texans and Baltimore Ravens get it on:

** UPDATE: It’s official. Terrell Suggs actually WILL suit up and presumably will play today. About 45 minutes ago, he warmed up in sweats. Shuttled across the 50-yard line, stopping occasionally to stretch. Appeared to be only offensive players (QBs, receivers) out at the time. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network just reported that the 2011 NFL defensive MVP is on the Baltimore dress list.

Even insiders are shaking their heads at yesterday’s news that Suggs had been activated and might play today, just six months after tearing his right Achilles.

** The roof is closed today at Reliant Stadium. Gonna be a hot one even for these parts in late October — mid 80s F.

** Both quarterbacks — Ravens’ Joe Flacco and Texans’ Matt Schaub — were out warming up now (9:55 am CDT) with their receivers.

** Both teams have byes next week. With both teams’ defences so banged up, could it come at a better time? No.

** I asked Texans DC Wade Phillips the other day if he’s ever seen a player other than J.J. Watt come into the league and dominate to this extent by early in his second year. His response: “Reggie White, when we had him, he was pretty darn good when he first sstarted playing.” Touche.

** I asked Watt, the star Texans DE, what the deal was with all the former Big Ten players on their roster. It’s the Big Ten South, I told him. His reply: We’ll take as many Big Ten guys as we can get. Obviously being from the Big Ten, it’s an honour to have that many guys … I remember draft day this year, and we kept drafting guys and it was like: Whitney Mercilus, Big Ten; DeVier Posey, Big Ten; Jared Crick, Big Ten. And I was like, ‘I like this. I like the way it’s headed.’”
