Would Burke really turn his back on Wilson now?

- March 1st, 2012

Perhaps Brian Burke already has fired Ron Wilson and will let Wilson announce it on Twitter in a few weeks.
Easter Sunday would be about right.
Kidding aside, as much as many in Leafs Nation are pining for a coaching change, it’s doubtful that it happens between now and the end of the regular season.
After defending Wilson to the lengths that he has in the past several months — a defence that was bolstered by a nudge-nudge, wink-wink contract extension revealed to the world via Twitter by Wilson on Christmas morning — it’s kind of hard to believe that Burke would go to the Leafs board now and insist that firing Wilson is best way to go.
Said Burke back on Boxing Day, when he was asked about extending Wilson through next season: “This is a coach who has earned this extension. It’s not charity, it’s not a gift.”
Does anyone really think Burke would stand up and say now that he has been wrong all along?
Yes, the Leafs are in a tailspin that does not seem to have an end. They’re incapable of putting together 60 solid minutes of hockey. Remember that the refrain from the dressing room recently has been along the lines of: “If only we had better starts, we would be fine.”
Well, the Leafs had a great start on Wednesday night against a Chicago Blackhawks club that had lost three in a row and was without captain Jonathan Toews. Yet Toronto couldn’t protect a 3-1 lead and wound up losing 5-4.
The Leafs have 18 games remaining. A small miracle will help them get to the playoffs, but a coaching change does not seem like it is in the offing along the way.
The betting is that it comes not long after the Leafs’ season ends on April 7 in Montreal.
