It’s not all gloomy …

- March 2nd, 2012

Nothing wrong with an emailer disagreeing with a point or three from a column – happens all the time – and when the argument is reasonable it merely illustrates the passion of hockey’s most loyal fan base.

But one morning after message following the Leafs 5-4 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday night stood out in illustrating how irrational some can be. While taking me to task for my column outlining how low this team has fallen, the reader suggested that a little optimism was in order after what was at least a better effort against the Blackhawks.

Optimism?

Well, since you asked, how about this: If the Tampa Bay Lightning upset the New York Rangers tonight  and Anaheim upends Calgary, the Leafs will slide all the way to 25th overall in the 30 team NHL.

How is this optimistic? Think of the great draft pick they would get if the season ended this weekend.

If you missed it late Thursday night, the Sabres shut out San Jose to slip into 10th in the Eastern Conference, a point ahead of the Leafs, who have 65. The Lightning, meanwhile, are just a point behind Toronto.

With Winnipeg’s blowout win over Florida on Thursday, the Leafs now trail the Jets by five points for the final playoff spot in the East.
