All In The Family: Franson Style

- February 18th, 2012

VANCOUVER – Maple Leafs defenceman Cody Franson had not seen his l’il bro Cain since August.

So when the two hockey-playing siblings got together Friday night, it was a reunion to remember.

On the night when the WHL’s Vancouver Giants honoured team alumnus Cody Franson by putting his name on the team’s ring of honour at the Pacific Coliseum, Cain paid tribute to his brother in his own special way.

After taking part in the ceremonial face-off in which Cody dropped the puck, Cain Franson went on to score a goal, added an assist and was slapped with a 10-minute misconduct en route to helping his Giants to a 6-2 win over the visiting Edmonton Oil Kings.

Cain and Cody’s special evening was seen by about 15 family members who made the six-hour drive from their home town of Sicamous in interior B.C. Also on hand was former Maple Leafs coach/GM Pat Quinn, who is a part owner of the Giants.

“It was such a special night,” said Cain Franson, who was awarded the team’s white plastic construction hat for being the Giants player of the game. “I haven’t seen Cody in so long – it’s been about six months.

“My family hasn’t seen me play here either. They came here to a game last year but I was a healthy scratch.”

Said proud brother Cody of Cain’s performance: “I told him to go out there and get him some. Well, he went out there and got him some.”

The entire Franson clan will be at the Rogers Arena on Saturday to see Cody and the Maple Leafs take on the Vancouver Canucks. It will be the first time Cody’s mother will see her son play live while wearing a Toronto jersey.

As for Cain Franson, he can not attend the Canucks-Leafs game because his Giants have a game of their own.

At least the brothers can share the special memories of Friday evening. It may have been billed as Cody Franson Night but, in reality, it ended up being Franson Family Night.
