Give him some credit for originality, but don’t give Ron Wilson a contract extension quite yet.
The Maple Leafs coach tweeted late on Friday night about hinting at getting an extension in his stocking on Christmas morning, saying: “This Xmas could be better if Santa stuffs a certain piece of paper in my stocking. #whatcouldthatbe”
The thinking is Wilson eventually will get an extension from Leafs general manager Brian Burke.
Trouble is, it’s still too early for that. The Leafs are in a good spot at the break, sitting in sixth in the Eastern Conference with 40 points, but by no stretch of the imagination is a playoff spot in the spring guaranteed.
New Jersey has 39 points and is in seventh, while Ottawa is in eighth with 39. Winnipeg is ninth with 37 points.
There’s always a chance that Wilson, who has a sharp sense of humour, simply was poking fun at his contract situation.
Let’s hope so. It’s too early in this season to extend the contract of someone who has not coached the Leafs to the playoffs in the previous three years he has been in Toronto.
Stocking stuffer? Nah. Why not wait and see what the Easter Bunny brings?
